I have a RC that I will not accept books from Book Crossing. One of my WL came. My request was denied because the person did not know what Book Crossing was.

So, as a PSA, I just want say that Book Crossing is a website where members can registers their books to track them around the world. These books usually have an ID and a note from the original member. After you read the books, you need to pass them on, which I might not want to do. To not feeling guilty, I just don't want to get them. Also, I don't like the stickers and the hand-written notes that sometimes accompanied them, either.

I just recently found out what they were.  I ordered a book from another site, and the giver said that it was a book crossing book, but I got it anyway.  I was expecting writing all in the front or something, but there was just a number written across the top of the very first page.  I thought, well, that's nothing.  I can live with that fine.  The book was in great shape.  Is the writing in the book what most people object to about book crossing books or is there another reason?  I'm curious why so many people don't want them.  I can understand if they are all marked up or something.

I was also wondering if you should feel guilty about keeping a book crossing book if you really like it.  Some people make it sound like they are books that have to be sent on to someone else.  I guess I'm still a little in the dark about them.

The few BookCrossing books I've seen have a bright green sticker on the front, and a bigger label inside with the tracking number and instructions.  I would feel guilty about taking one out of circulation, they felt "borrowed" from bookcrossing not "mine" to possibly keep, so I also have a RC for them.

I used to have a no BC condition because I felt guilty about them - then the same thing happened to me, someone didn't know what it was and I lost out on a very rare book. Now I have no conditions and just live with the guilt. ;-) I hardly ever get any BC books anyway.

Do they absolutely have to be passed on? I've gotten a couple and have had them a while now (just haven't gotten around to reading them yet.) What happens if I keep them too long or decide to keep them for good? I'm not a BC member, so I never enter the code anyways, is that a no no too?

Leann, .  It's my understanding although Bookcrossing encourages "catch and release",  the books are actually yours, I'm just being anal.  It's nice to enter the codes, especially if they are books you are going to swap again.  It is rather fun to see where they've been & gone to, but it's completely voluntary.

The one BC book I have doesn't have any stickers, only an ID written in pencil on the first page.  I guess the person I got it from was the first person to own the book.  I haven't read it yet, but if it's a keeper, it seems silly to send this perfect copy on to someone else and go and buy myself another copy.  If I love it, I'll try not to feel guilty about keeping it.

I've only ever gotten one BC book.  It only had one sticker on the inside and I'm thinking the girl that sent the book to me was the "original" owner, because it was in such nice shape.  Anyway, the book I ordered was a keeper that I was ordering a nice hardback for displaying (which is another part of the story.  Because it's a keeper I've got super picky RC's for these particular books.  I'm surprised she couldn't tell it was a keeper and went ahead and put the sticker in there. And yes I know it was her cause her's was the only entry in the BC webpage.)  I absolutely do not feel guilty at all about it likely never leaving my possession.  :) What are they going to do, hunt me down?  Moral here: don't feel guilty.

The book is yours once it's in your hands.  You don't have to repost it or pass it along to someone else if you don't want to.  You don't have to post on BC that you even have the book.  It's your book, tear out or erase that BC note if you want to.

I've only gotten one BC book.  I had it for several months before reading it.  I never logged it on BC.  It wasn't a keeper so I passed it on but I tore out the BC note taped inside the front cover.

I have no guilt about it either.  My book to do with what I want, no stupid website is going to make me feel guilty about it.

Lol!  This had me just about doubled over laughing:

Do they honestly think some shopper is going to pick up their stickered obnoxious marked book out of the tomatoes and say "look! a book whose content interests me! For free! in the tomatoes! At the store! But it's free!"

I have gotten a few B-Xing books and none of them were obnoxious, so I've never bothered with RCs.  The most was the large piece of paper type sticker inside the first page & it peeled right out with no damage.

I have never gottena  bookcrossing book in around 400 received books (including BOBS, deals and games).

Could you maybe add an explination in you RC as to what a Bookcrossing book is?  I had someone with that RC when I first joined. I had no idea what bookcrossing was. But the RC mentioned stamps and stickers and since the book had nothing like that-I accepted and sent it out.

You could put a url in there for the bookcrossings site, couldn't you?  I dunno about an active link - I haven't looked at the formatting for RCs in a gazillion months, but you could at least put in a url.  The problem being, people would probably be too lazy to copy & paste it in their browser & look at the site:P

Kim & Mary,

Yeah, I edited my RC to add more info about BC as well as a link. Hopefully, that will work.

I got a BC book once with quite a few neon-colored stickers on it. That is why I added that RC. I did not have that before.

It's your book, tear out or erase that BC note if you want to.

while i'm not a bookcrosser, i don't get why you'd do that unless it was a book you were planning to keep.  if you're going to repost it anyway, and the markings are tasteful, why not just leave it?  tearing out the label or erasing the number just seems mean, especially since in the book guideline conditions it specifically says BC books that aren't excessively marked are ok.

i've only gotten a couple of bookcrossing books in 200+ with a label inside the front cover, but when i was finished with them i just passed them on as is without entering them on BC.
