I have an RC of "not in a current smoking household."  I was denied with a "used book" response from the poster.  I have had this book on my WL for over a year.  I am now listed 2 of 58 on my wish list.  Is there anything I can do?

If you want the book badly enough to risk it being smokey, you could turn off your RCs if/when it is offered again.   I don't think there is anything you can do retroactively about an order that was turned down do to RCs.

What Kathryn suggested, this copy was automatically offered to the next person in line.

I have been no 2 of 58 since I was denied.  What happens if that person times out?  Will I then go back to being no 1?

I am just frustrated since they sent "used book" as a comment.  I know it is a used book.  If they would have said nothing, I would have just thought it was in a current smoking household.  I know that they books on here are used and one cannot account for everywhere the book has been if it was bought/traded used, kwim?

Unfortunately, some people just really hate RCs and refuse them on principle, even the sensibly worded ones, which yours sounds like.

You were not #1 to begin with. It doesn't bump you down when you get denied for RCs. The person ahead of you probably also had an RC and they declined that one and then yours. Now the book is being offered to the 3rd person. Some people turn down any and all RCS especially if it's a WL books.  Because they don't want to deal with RCS and know eventually they'll get to a wisher that doesn't have them.

If the RCS aren't that important than turn them off on books that aren't posted that often.

If I bought a book used, read it immediately and posted it-I might turn down a smoking RC as well.  I have a poor sense of smell and probably wouldn't notice if it was smokey.  If I only had the book for a few days there would be no time for the scent to air out of it.

Turn off the "auto-order" on the book so that the next time it's offered to you, you can turn off your RCs and accept it.  If you leave it on auto-order on your WL, then you won't have the opportunity to turn off the RCs before the order goes into the system.

I don't know if it helps, but I have the same RC although I have added a sentence to make it clear that I am ok accepting books if the member doesn't know they were from a smoking household before them (that's a little convoluted and I think my RC makes more sense - at least I hope!) in an effort to avoid getting turned down from people who assume that I am sensitive to all smoke.

I remember someone had a smoking RC that said something like:

"If you are living in a non-smoking home, then send the book!  If anyone in your house smokes, then decline this request."

It's all in the wording.  I'd accept that one as a non-smoker.  If you use the word "allergies" I won't send a book I bought used.  Many people are allergic to things they can't smell, like pollen, etc.  "Smell" isn't a good indicator of whether you'll be affected and demand your credit back.

If it took that long for the the book to get posted and you are really wanting it now, I'd suggest you find a used book seller and just go ahead and buy it.  Of course, I don't know what book you are talking about, but if its not rare, just uncommon, you'll probably not have too much trouble finding it.  I know several portals to search through if you can't find it.   PM me if you need help finding your book from a seller (I won't make any money off of it, I'm just an x-ref librarian who hasn't lost the compulsion to find books LOL).
