I have nothing against RCs but when they are vague I will refuse to send the book. I got the following RCs and would like to respond gently.

"The book must come from a smoke-free household. Also, I only send out books that are in very good condition and would only like to receive books that are in very good condition. If you have any doubt about the condition, please PM me: my ultimate goal is to know exactly what I'm getting. :) "

The whole "very good condition" and "please PM me" bother me. Very good condition can mean so many different things. And I really don't want to get into a big dialogue in pms.

So how can I word my decline?

decline

#1 you are not required to pm anyone.

ETA: just word it as too vague.

"Hi, If you wish people to PM you before accepting your book request, you should provide your nickname in the RC. I am not sure if "very good condition" means the same to you as it does it me, so I am declining your RC. Thanks"

since you are not required to pm them, having a nickname in the Rc would not help.

Hi Char,

I don't think you get the option to send a PM unless you agree to the requestor conditions.  I know when you decline the book you are asked then the reason why you can't send it.   Both PBS and the other member see your response then.

I think the term "very good condition" is too subjective.  I know what I consider to be very good condition, but there is no guarantee the other person will agree with this assessment.   I know that I personally have been getting a rash of RC's suddenly.  The ones that say non-smoking home are pretty straightforward, but then then you get the ones that request no yellowed pages, no musty smell, etc. that can become subjective.   Therefore, in regard to your question, I would just decline it and explain that you found the term "very good condition" to be too subjective and that you are not willing to risk a credit.  If you send your book DC with prepaid postage, you would of course get your credit right away, but run the risk of having to give it back if the other person claims a problem with the book.  Best of luck!

This is what I would say.  "I'm sorry but I'm not sure that my book meets your conditions and I dont want to risk you being unhappy so Im going to have to pass."

Correct, you are not required to PM before accepting or declining an RC.

However, you certainly can, if the person asks for it and you are inclined to. In this case, if someone is requesting a PM first, they should provide their nickname in the RC, so that you can send them a PM. You would just send a PM to their nickname, without going thru the book request buttons itself.

Its also perfectly acceptable to just decline an RC that asks for a PM first ... just answer "I prefer not to PM about RCs" or something like that. No big deal, either way.

I would decline, stating, "I do not accept RCs that are not clear as stated or require PMs to clarify. Your terms are too subjective."

I like Spuddies response. I would not have accepted that one either.  that part about "knowing exactly what I'm getting" just screams picky person to me like they are going ot complain if there is a dog earred page you didn't mention. Trading books on PBS is supposed to be a fun/cheap way to get new books and RCS like this just suck the fun right out of PBS.

I would likewise decline, with this in the text box:

I am not confident that our definition of "very good condition" are similar, and prefer not to PM to clarify RCs.

Here is what I ended up saying:  I don't accept RCs that are not clear or require PMs to clarify. Your terms are subjective and I'm not confident that our definitions of "very good condition" are the same. I don't want to risk losing a credit to find out.

So you can see I took a little bit from a few different responses that were posted here. Thanks again.

Today the same member ordered the book from me again but I can't figure out how she did that. If I refused the order the system shouldn't let her order it from me again should it?

When a book is declined due to RCs, the member is given the option or reordering the book with their RC turned off- this is likely what happened.

The requestor most likely does not understand that you got the request again. Is yours the only copy in the system? If you declined for RCs then the request should just go to the next person in FIFO. If yours is the only copy, then she probably re-ordered the book not knowing that the request goes back to you.

You should decline her request again, and explain that her request has come back to the same person, you feel the RCs are vague, and she should either re-request the book from you with her RCs turned off, or wait to re-order until there are more copies of the book in the system.
