From the inside dust jacket: "Set amid the Novii Uzen oil fields of western Kazakhstan, where labor unrest and ethnic strife have led to murder, ROUGH BEAST is a white-hot novel of murder, drugs, and revenge that brilliantly illuminates the historic political and social upheavals at the heart of Russian life today.
Ivan Duvakin's days working anonymously in a Moscow ministry are over. His wife has been brutally murdered, leaving him to contend with a rebellious teenaged stepdaughter who follows him when he leaves Moscow for his latest assignment. Soon both their lives are in grave danger. As Duvakin becomes aware of his stepdaughter's growing intimacy with a Kazakhstan labor leader-and a narcotics underground-ROUGH BEAST turns into Duvakins' most personal and most perilous adventure yet.
ROUGH BEAST is the first novel since the coup to depict the human dramas behind the disintegration of the Soviet Union. It demonstrates Olcott's unparalleled ability to burrow beneath the surface of Russian life to dramatize the character of its people's souls."

I read Olcott's earlier books and was very happy to find Rough Beast. Duvakin is a very sympathetic character and his insights into the demise of the Soviet Union are great.
