This year, The Race is doubly special because it is the 100th time the race has been held since it was inaugurated on May 17th, 1875, by Colonel M. Lewis Clark, in the faraway days when horse races were said to have been judged "by three brave men standing in the infield with a bottle of Bourbon."
The Race is a worldwide sporting event, a multimillion-dollar business, an event rich in unalterable and cherished traditions. Now, a week before starting time, all this is the responsibility of Lee Ames, Kenturcy Colonel (honorary) and President of Churchill Downs, as he faces the annual blizzard of problems: how many horses, what kind of weather, how many visitors?
