Have some time on your hands when you pick this book up. The plot grips you with violence, power, corruption, hate and love. You find it difficult to put the book down. I found myself completely absorbed while reading this book how wonderful is that?

Always looking for a new author I can get behind, I took the advise of many friends and read this book. WOW! Normally I am a "Romantic, man & woman meet fall in love have a problem get back together" sort of story-lover. This is more like a rollercoaster ride of life. For fear of giving anything away if you read the book but wanting anyone who will listen to read this and be inspired to read this book: Sheldon gives you fantastic character developement. You have a heroine who you can't help but want to cheer on, a supporting hero who you want to like but for the fact that he's married, and a lead hero who you want to hate but just can't because he's to dangerously enchanting. The book is about a lady lawyer and the trials (no pun intended) of her life. During the coarse of the story I kept thinking how is Sheldon going to fix "all this" by the end of the book, and the answer is simple: This is not a story where everything gets fixed. When I first read the back of the book the last line was " they find a love that is more destructive than hate". At first my interpretation was that it was a love that could destruct hate, but now after reading the book the hard part to handle was it meant the love itself was more destructive to the characters than hate was. There are a million love stories that are "Happy ever after", I've read hundreds of them, this is love with some twists and turns, but every bit as fantastic.
This book is very worth reading and grips you right from the start. Sheldon has a way with words that allows you to become part of the story. I hope that you give it a go. I look forward to reading more Sheldon novels! : )

ISBN 0446356611 - For me, this is not Sheldon's best effort, if only because Jennifer Parker, the main character, suffers from a lack of a life - and this is largely her life story. Still, even a book that's not his best is a very good book anyway!

Jennifer Parker passed the New York Bar Exam the first time. From there, it was going to be all good. She had a job working for the NY District Attorney, Robert Di Silva, and the idealistic outlook of a go-getter young lawyer. And then, suddenly, it appeared to be over - her law career was finished a mere four hours after it began. She had sat in the courtroom on one case, and that case would define the rest of her life. Jennifer was made a pawn by Michael Moretti, a Mafia don. That earned her the lifelong hatred of D.A. Di Silva and, eventually, the lifelong love of Adam Warner.

The twists and turns Jennifer takes are made plausible, which is a storytelling feat. From defending the poor for nothing to defending the Mafia is a leap, but Sheldon pulled that off. What bothered me is that, as I said before, brilliant and beautiful Jennifer, has no life. She has no family, one friend and a career. This, apparently, explains how this high profile, somewhat notorious lawyer is able to have a child and keep his existence secret from pretty much everyone for seven years. Even less realistic than that is the last chapter, but I hate to spoil it for anyone! I'll just say it's amazing to me that she's living as Jennifer Parker, free woman, anywhere in the U.S. The nitpicking aside, Sheldon is always worth reading!

Like all of Sydney Sheldon's books, this one is an intense, quickly read thriller. Hard to put down once you start reading, therefore the "quick" part!
