People make plenty of jokes about the metaphors and writing of D.H. Lawrence. Even the author himself thought his work rather schlocky but once you get past the rather blatant metaphors you have at the heart a rather terrific story that covers multiple generations and also the callous and tender side of the human spirit. I think he also showed that the Victorians weren't a bunch of staid prudes but were passionate feeling people who were sexually excited just like now. The books is heart-breaking and gloomy in periods but there is such a sense of yearning by the characters that you feel yourself to be a part of the experience.
