Out of poverty and discrimination, he struggled for an education and by perseverance and determination became an outstanding anthropologist, an expert on colonization and Chief of the African Section of the O.S.S. In 1944 he was appointed Territorial Specialist, thus becoming the first Negro in American history to take over a desk in the State Department. He has been U.S. Commissioner on Caribbean and West Indian affairs, and as Secretary of the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine he proved his ability as statesman and strategist by bringing about the peace treaty between the Arabs and Jews. In 1950 he received the Nobel Prize for Peace. Today his title in the United Nations is Undersecretary for Special Political Affairs.
