This was my first Julie Garwood and OH MY GOD!!!! I loved this book. While I was reading it, I was working full time and planning my wedding. I finished it in three late nights. I was up until two in the morning which for me is incredible. (What can I say, I like my sleep!) I loved Brodick and Gillian. I cried at the end. It was one of my favorite romances and I will always keep a copy of it on my bookshelf!

First I have read of this author. If you like stories based with the England/Scotland feud theme then this is the book for you. Suspense, romance, humor - this book has it all. Great read (but does have sex scenes so if not comfortable with them then do not get this book or skip them as I do. :))

If you want your alpha males in kilts then this is the way to go. Garwood's heroines are always funny, touching and generally have some backbone (thank God!). This is probably one of the best books Julie Garwood has ever written. They are all keepers and when I need some sniffy romance in my life, I go back and re-read them. If you enjoy Lynn Kurland or if you cut your teeth on Kathleen Woodiweiss (sp) you will like Garwood. She is probably one of the best writers of this genre today. Get these historicals and read them all.

I L-O-V-E this book!!!! I finished it and missed the characters so much that I went back a few days later and READ IT AGAIN!!! ALL the characters are well developed and make you care for them...I laughed out loud and even shed a few tears over them.
LOTS of fun twists and lots of highlander manliness :)

***MAKE SURE YOU READ THE FIRST BOOK in the connected series THE SECRET first!!! ****

The next book in the series SHADOW MUSIC is another favorite of mine.

I was a bit skeptical, but I thought I would try it.

I ended up enjoying the book and have decided that it's a keeper. And as a result, I want to read "The Secret", the prequel of sorts.

In Ransom, New York Times bestselling author Julie Garwood returns to her beloved Highlands and the dark days of the despotic rule of King John to reacquaint readers with Scottish chieftain Brodick Buchanan, first introduced in The Secret. Brodick finds himself playing protector to Gillian, an exquisite English beauty, who is desperate to find her long-lost sister and a treasure of incalculable worth--one for which many already have died, including Gillian's own father. Coerced by the fiendish Baron Alford, who murdered her father before her eyes and usurped her birthright 14 years earlier, Gillian must return to England with Arianna's Box, a bejeweled golden box commissioned by King John, or her beloved Uncle Morgan will be tortured to death. In spite of Gillian's fragile looks and her loathsome English bloodlines, Brodick encounters a woman of immeasurable courage and determination, one not at all intimidated by his legendary temper or imposing size. And as he realizes that he has met his match in Gillian--whose sense of honor and duty equals his own--their passion for each other grows ever stronger in this thrilling historical

I Love Julie Garwood!!! She has the most interesting characters, and the funniest circumstances. This is a historical novel in the days after the death of Richard the Lionheart. Gillian is the victim of Baron Alfred who slaughters her father, and destroys her family. Luckily she meets up with the handsome Laird Sinclair who thinks that she is perfect except for the fact that she is English. Fast paced and fun, everything a book should be.

Abridged/2 Cassettes/Approx 3 Hours.

The #1 New York Times bestselling author adored by a worldwide audience, Julie Garwood weaves an intricate tapestry of intrigue and emotion in this daring new novel. Stepping back to the silver-shrouded Highlands of her classic tale The Secret, Garwood hails the return of two unforgettable heroes -- Ramsey Sinclair and Brodick Buchanan -- and follows a twisting labyrinth of deadly secrets and medieval splendor.

In the dark days after the death of Richard the Lionhearted, lives and lands would fall into upheaval at the hands of a power-hungry British ruler and his violent minions. One victim of the scourge is innocent Gillian, who is a mere child when the cruel and ambitious Baron Alford slaughters her father and tears her family apart. Alford, determined to recover a jeweled box for the despotic King John, is furious when the precious treasure slips through his fingers -- only to be lost for more than a decade.

Now a beautiful young woman who has forged a life for herself, Gillian finds the key to resolving her past in handsome Scottish chieftains Ramsey Sinclair and Brodick Buchanan. With the cunning and courage of the daring Scotsmen to aid her, and finding a bond of trust and friendship with a new ally, Bridgid KirkConnell, Gillian at last fights the unscrupulous Baron Alford, laying claim to her home, her family, and her father's reputation. But in the presence of the mighty warriors beside them, Gillian and Bridgid will discover that desire can be a weapon of conquest...betrayal can slay trust in a heartbeat...and the greatest risk of all is surrender -- to the deep emotions of unexpected love.

Resounding with the steely clash of sword-against-sword, and the pounding of hearts bound by cliff-hanging peril, Ransom sweeps from Scotland to England with all of the majesty of medieval glory days. With her special storytelling gifts in full force, Julie Garwood spins an unforgettable page-turner of passion and loyalty, justice, and honor.

As a child, Gillian saw Baron Alford slaughter her father. Her father's guards try to move Gillian and her sister to safety. Her older sister made it to Scotland, but Gillian wasn't so lucky. Now Baron Alford wants to find the King's treasure and believes Gillian knows where it is located. He blackmails her into traveling to Scotland to find her sister and the treasure. But Gillian has a plan. She quickly gains the help of Scottish Lairds Brodick Buchanan and Ramsey Sinclair. With their help and the help of her newest friend, Brigid Kirkconnell, Gillian will bring her fight right back to England and the doorstep of Baron Alford.

This is the second book in the Highland's Lairds series. It was a very amusing story with two romances. I wish we could have had a little more time with Ramsey and Brigid. Gillian is a strong heroine who uses her head. Brodick is a big guy who is always scowling and frightens many of the women in his clan. He doesn't scare Gillian at all. My rating: 5 Stars.

Great story line. Here's my review:

Lady Gillian knows that the dark hides monsters and secrets. One night, when she was very young, her life changed forever. The only problem is that she was too young to remember most of it. Her servant helps her remember her past as she gets older, and Gillian knows that the monsters still wait for her in the form of Baron Alford the Red and his men. After all, she has something he wants.

As an adult, Lady Gillian must return to her former holding, where she witnessed her father's death as a child and face the Baron. She crosses path with a kidnapped child, and in a series of events, meets his guardian, Laird Brodick Buchannan. She turns to him for his strength and protection. He tricks her into marrying him. Together, they set out to destroy Gillian's monsters.

Good book with a great plot. A little weak on the romance side. Love scenes are few and far between, and don't really happen until about halfway through. That was the only disappointment i could find in this book. Great read if you like mysteries.

Happy reading,
Aurielle

So I love Julie Garwood. Her books are great, however this one is just good. I do feel that it lacked a bit of emotion between Brodick and Gillian. They don't meet until page 130! More info needed to be in there about Brigid and Ramsey, it would have made the ending have more of an impact! Anyways, it's still good and worth the read, just not as good as The Bride or Saving Grace! Just started reading Honor's Splendour.
