A sad beginning with the story of a highland like culture facing destruction and oppression at the hands of a more organized culture. But like in all David Gemmell books, heroes arrive and tragedy will happen but the forces of good will battle the forces of evil and hopefully win. To fight evil, Gemmel assembles; Kaelin, an untried youth, his aunt Maev a genius at business, his role model, Jaim, giant fighter with a broken heart, and Gaise, a young nobleman whose father hates him. When a sacrifice is made it will create within the highlanders, a spark of resistance and greatness that will be necessary to fight the true evil that is coming. Once again, Gemmel creates an entire world full of regular people who you will come to know, and a world that like ours needs only the good to be neutral for evil to win and a book which makes you better for reading it.

Book 3 of David Gemmell's rigante series, it's fantastic, it strays away from the first to, and doesn't involve Connovar or Bane, but it still deals with the rigante. I loved it!

Book III in the four book series of the Rigante. This is a great series about humans, a magical race of people and their fight against evil. Sounds like the ordinary but it is well done and a interesting.

Possibly the best book in the Rigante series... Gemmell as usual spins a a yarn that will get you emotionally involved and tied to his characters. This book is definately a must read for all Gemmell fans!
