I just mailed out my first two books (yay), and they were both over 13oz. It told me that since they were over that amount that they needed to be mailed from the post office or printing the label.  I have a massive amount of stamps is there any reason that I cannot just match the amount PBS tells me with stamps?

Thanks for the help!

None at all.  Afix the proper amount of postage  on the papckage and then, if it is over 13 ounces takes it to the PO and hand it over to the postal worker

Books OVER 13oz on which you only have stamps MUST be taken to the post office and handed to a postal clerk.  It is a Homeland Security regulation.

Books weighing less than 13oz can be dropped into a postal box with stamps only.

Though I don't understand why printing the label makes it less of a homeland security problem. lol

I believe the theory is that printed postage is trackable/traceable.  Therefore the govt can identify the sender if necessary.

It's not printing the LABEL that matters, it's printing the postage that you have to pay for.  There is a record of that payment, if they need it.          I can't imagine why they'd need it, but that's the reason.

I can't imagine why they'd need it, but that's the reason.

In case you're sending some dangerous stuff through the mail (explosives probably weigh more than 13 oz.), then they could track it or stop it from getting to its destination.

Using stamps is very anonymous...I bet all those Anthrax envelopes that were sent out in those days after 9/11 used stamps.

Just use the printed postage if you don't want to go to the post office on books over 13oz.  Postage through paypal is a bit cheaper. But it doesn't give you the credit guarantee.  Also the fee to PBS helps pay for the running of the website.
