Yesterday I received a book that I couldn't find on my 'En Route to Me' tab to mark it as received. Then I went to my 'Books I have Requested' tab and found it there. It said Accepted-Printed on Nov. 9th. I pmed the sender and told him that I couldn't mark the book as received until he marked it as mailed. I haven't heard anything back yet and the book is still on my BIHR tab. The problem is tomorrow night, on the 14th the book will be marked as 'No answer from sender after alloted time', if I don't hear from the sender. Then PBS will find the next sender and place the book again on my tab. What can I do to stop that from happening?

Maybe if you contact TPTB they can prevent it from reordering it for you.

You will be able to mark the book received from the transaction archive, once it is moved there if he doesn't mark it mailed.

And as long as you're quicker than the sender, you can always cancel the next request.

If you place your bookshelf on vacation hold before the current transaction is canceled, the system won't order another copy for you.

And if anyone else is in a situation like Connie's, be sure you click on the PM button to see the name there.  Then compare it with the name on the package.  If the names are the same, the current sender -- the one on your My Account page, on the "Book's I've Requested" tab -- hasn't marked the book mailed yet.

If the names aren't the same, the book you received is very likely from a canceled transaction, and the current transaction on your My Account page is probably for a second copy of the book.  You'll want to cancel the second order if you can.  This is a long help doc, but it has detailed instructions on how to figure out what happened, and on what to do:

I got a book I requested, but I can't mark it received!

(Sorry -- can't seem to make these clickable tonight, but you can find it in the Help Center.)

Just checked my pms that I sent out and the sender of the book I described hasn't read my pm yet. I will put my shelf on vacation hold as Patty suggested. Then when the book goes into my archive, I will mark it as received. Hope it works.

Ooops, just checked my tab for requested by me and there are other books that will be canceled because of not answering in alloted time tonight. I don't want to miss out on getting another sender for those books because of one guy who didn't mark his book mailed. So, now I am going to unhold my vacation hold and just cancel any requests (there are 16 copies at the moment) that come up if I can catch them on that book.  This really is becoming a problem that I'm not liking at all. There isn't anything in the help docs that pertains to not missing out on the other books. I'm stumped on how to solve this quickly.

Vacation hold doesn't prevent books you've requested from rolling over to the next person. It only prevents WL books you've posted from rolling over to the next wisher.

Vacation hold doesn't stop transactions in progress.  So if you've requested a book, the system will continue to process it even if it times out.  If the system orders you another copy, you will just have to cancel it yourself.  Then go to the transaction archive and mark the book you've received as "received".  But Mary is right.  Vacation hold will hold your place in line on a wishlisted book, but it will not stop a transaction you've already requested.

From help docs:

Books that are already involved in an active request will not be affected by the Hold. Any book request that was submitted before the Hold went into effect will not be affected by the Hold Any book request you submit at any time (before, during or after the Hold will not be affected by the Hold.

I believe Mary is correct on that one. You can order books while on Vacation Hold so I don't see that stopping the request from being passed on. You cannot offer books while on Vacation so any requests from you will be stopped by the hold.

I don't recommend cancelling the request to avoid the timing out. That will just leave the book on the non-responsive member's shelf and you won't ever get by them. Leave your request and let the system do its thing. If you do end up getting 2 copies, it won't be your fault and you will not have to give the first person credit. That will be a hard, but good lesson learned by the sender to properly maintain their account.

I'd leave my acct off of hold since holding it won't stop the request from rolling over.

I'd take the chance that I'll be able to cancel the second request for the book before that person can accept and print the label.  If by some small chance the second requestor has accepted and label printed and mailed before you get on PBS tomorrow morning to cancel the request, then it's not your problem.  You won't have to give this first sender their credit since they failed to mark the book mailed.  It's completely their fault for not marking mailed and not reading your PM and reacting to it right away to save their credit.

You could put up a temp RC asking the next person to let the request sit so you can cancel-explain why and that they won't lose their place in line. That you are just trying to prevent getting a 2nd copy.

Yay! He just pmed me and marked the book mailed and I promptly marked it as received. Just hours before it would have been canceled. His computer broke down. Things happen. Thanks everyone for the great answers in case this happens again.
