I ordered two books from an APO member. Today I received a large envelope inside a PO bag (saying sorry about the problem with the package).with only one book in it and not the other one. It looks like the sender used too large of an envelope (not a bubble mailer) and the half that wasn't holding any books was the part that got ripped open in several spots. What do I do now?

You mark one received and one not. PM the sender and let them know that one was lost in the mail and they can file the forms to see if they can find the book.

Melanie, thanks. Does it matter that she is a APO member? Would she have trouble doing that?

If it was me, I might also gently suggest to your sender that she may want to wrap packaging more tightly around books instead of leaving them loose in the package, because its not uncommon that leaving them loose causes packaging to rip, and in some cases, enough to cause books to fall out. Its happened to more than a few members.

Good luck with everything. I lost four books this way once, the only thing that made it into my mailbox was one really large, and quite empty, bubble mailer. I would definitely mention that envelopes need to be taped tightly around the books so they don't get caught in the machinery, or so the books don't slide around inside until they rip their way out through the weakest part of the packaging.

I seem to have had a rash of too large envelopes lately.  Thankfully, nothing torn enough for the book to come out or be damaged.  Worst thing was a hardcover where the dustjacket had slipped down and was a bit mashed on the bottom.  I need to start PMing the senders and gently reminding them to fold over that extra part of the envelope and tape it semi-tight.

This has very little to do with APOs and alot to do with the mail sorting machines.  The PO is using more and more sorting machines.  Any loose corner gets caught and rips.  If the books don't fall out, they get wet.  Just folding and taping the envelopes prevents this.

I have very little trouble with bubble mailers, but oversized regular manilla envelopes are very much at risk for postal damage.  And it's so easy to just fold them down to a snug fit and secure with packing tape.

I just received the paper back version of Dead Witch Walking in a white buble mailer.  The person didn't make sure it was in there tight and it got split open in three places.  The book got wet and the covers got messed up so now its not really a postable book, but its not in that bad of condition either.  I didn't really think it was the persons fault so I didn't punish them for it. But if people would make sure to wrap there books better it would help.

I use paper bags eiter for lunches (for paperbacks) or from groceries store (for hardbacks) then make sure I get scotch tape over most of the paper so its doesn't get wet and rip.  You can get paper bags free when you get your groceries so its not like you have to pay for them and your resuing them so its recycling them too.  Its better than plastic bags.  Some people might say it pushes the postage up but it doesn't its the same as if i would have used regualr paper.  I've  gotten several thanks from members who have recieved my books in wrapping and who have receved them the other way.  People appriciate the extra time you take in wrapping the books plus if they see another option thats cheap for wrapping the books they tend to want to use that way too.

Well, I finally pmed the sender about this book missing. Now, I'm waiting to see what she says. I also wrote a little note at the bottom of the book I received to PBS just to let them know what's happened.
