Hi all,

Today another swapper received a book from me. It is a miniature edition, but was correctly posted under the right ISBN. She is not happy with what she received and sent me a nasty PM, complaining that the title doesn't describe it as "miniature" and that she feels cheated, but admitting that the book was posted correctly.

The bottom line is, she checked the book in as "wrong book received" when she admits herself that the correct book was received. I am now out of a credit and the postage I spent sending it to her.

Is this fair? Has anyone encountered this situation before? What can I do?

Please help!

-Mary

Contact PBS and explain the situation.  If she agreed in a PM that you did indeed send the correct book, they may be able to help you out.

You are out nothing unless you gave the credit back, the decision to refund a credit on a RWP transaction is completely up to the sender. If she is wrong and the book was posted correctly, you are under no obligation to give the credit back. If she is nasty, contact the site and have them explain to her about proper conduct on the site.

Hi Mary,

I am sorry you have encountered an unhappy swapper.  From what you said, it appears you did nothing wrong and don't owe her a credit.  I am curious, however, about the miniature size.  I, myself, have some books listed that I would classify as miniature, even though there is nothing to indicate this in the ISBN listing.  Now I am worried that I will encounter someone like you did if anyone ever requests these books from me.  Would you mind telling what book it was?

I've never seen a miniature version before. Does it actually say "miniature" somewhere on the cover? Usually it's the poster's responsibility to make sure the info on the book matches the info on PBS and if it doesn't match, then the PBS info needs to be corrected.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone!

The book is Sex for Dummies by Dr. Ruth. It's 3 inches by 3 inches and 128 pages. (the isbn is 0762407506 if anyone's interested). It says it's a "miniature edition" in a small graphic on the cover, but that could be hard to read. I guess the only other way you'd know what size it was is to check the details on Amazon.com. Maybe the Swap should put a notation of a book's size in their details info.

Anyway, I'm not refunding the credit. The recipient has sent me another snippy PM, so I'm done communicating with her. Most of my dealings with Swappers have been happy ones so this is just a blip on the radar screen as far as I'm concerned.

Good night to all!

I looked at the ISBN both here and on amazon. It does say "miniature edition" quite clearly on the cover, if you opt to see the larger image on PBS. Also, the normal sized book of the same name has a different ISBN.

So I agree with the OP's decision.

Mary, you did exactly right! I ordered a book like that one time, not realizing it was a minature, but the ISBN matched and I totally realized it was my mistake not the sender's. I would never have dreamed for asking for the credit back for something I had ordered! I was mad, but only at myself.

I have to admit, I had to chuckle at the thought of Dr. Ruth writing a "miniature" book, being as she's rather diminutive herself. LOL

Is a "minature version" like an abridged version or is it just physically small?

Hi Jennifer,

It can be either, although in this case there is a larger version that also has about three times as many pages. In the future, if I post another mini, I might PM the requestor to let them know the size before I send it, just to save myself some hassle.

Cheryl, I'm ROFL!!

I've sent out several of those little books with no problems.  The book description usually includes the # of pages.   You can double check that to be sure it matches your edition.

Title, author, binding, ISBN match--it was posted correctly.

I've also posted these tiny books without a problem, sorry you ran into someone who is unable to take personal responsibility for their mistakes. If she continues to send you snippy messages please report her to PBS.

Mary, you should make sure that you do respond to her clarifying the problem and why you aren't returning the credit (if you haven't already) because if she marked this transaction a "wrong book" RWAP, it's not just an exchange of inboxes between you & her, it's going to be in the transaction dialogue attached to it, and will be saved in your transaction record.  If she doesn't note that she marked this in error or she doesn't mark it resolved, you want to make sure that it's clarified in the transaction dialogue, so that you are protected in the event that the PBS team ever has cause to review it.  Just my two cents worth on that.  Hope it all works out:)

With these "tiny" books, I always go to the book data edit page to make sure the right information (like size) is there before I post the book.  I do this so that I am able to "document" that the information was available and that the PBS team will also see that information.  This size (actual dimensions) aren't on the book's listing page, but it is available to see if you know where to look.  I really doubt that anyone does look.  But there are a couple of publishers that specialize in these "tiny" books, so even if I'm in the right, I can see getting someone who's not happy about getting a book of that size for a credit.   I certainly wouldn't give the credit back unless TPTB decide that these aren't appropriate books here.  One publisher is Running Press books which puts out a line of "kits" that feature a tiny book along with accessories (all in a small box), and I've wondered before it those should really be on here because the tiny books do not always have the minimum nuber of pages required here.  But I do see them here once in a while.  I think they are cute.  And they cost about what a new paperback book costs new.  But once again I can see someone not being amused with receiving one if they weren't expecting to get one.

I found an example of what I'm talking about here on PBS up for trade:

http://www.paperbackswap.com/book/details/9780762413645-Itty+Bitty+Buddha+Miniature+Editions+Pocket+Pack

There is a review of it if you want to go to read it.

The link you provided Ruth is of something that is not postable on PBS.  Anything that requires non-media items to use cannot be traded here.

I know it's unpostable.  But these (like other items prohibited) are offered regularly.  When I was a brand new member, I ordered and got one that is a different kit, but it came anyway.  They have "books" included, but that's not the point.  And if one were received by someone who didn't know what they were ordering a RWAP would be in order.    If you read the review there is notice that it doesn't have the one of the non-book items, but a new one would be added  by the sender. The publisher of this item does put out tiny (stand alone ) books as well.

What Kim said.  Do be sure, if you haven't already, to politely provide a clear decision and explanation and that you are declining to return her credit.  It sounds like you are in the right here; just be sure to note it for the official PBS record.

And if her PMs are rude or abusive, please report her to the PBS team using the "Contact Us" link.  Otherwise, she'll go on being snarky to other members :-)

Cheers,

Catt
