My 26 year old cousin is getting married in late May and her wedding shower is next week. I don't really know her but my mom and I have been invited. I would like to give her a good faith-based book on making a marriage work. Any suggestions? She's not overly religious although her mother is - I don't want to give her anything too preachy or anything that really promotes the "submissive" wife - I think that would probably turn her off toward reading the book. Not to mention she's seen where it got her mother - divorced single parent of 4 kids.

I love His Needs Her Needs and Men are From Mars, Womenn are from Venus.  DH and I read them together years ago and we're still using the principles.

I would suggest The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman or For Women Only by Shaunti Feldhahn.  I have read both books, and they're both fabulous for understanding your spouse better.

My all-time number one most favorite book about marriage is Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs. I have heard him in person, been to the video seminar, and read the book--really good stuff.

My husband and I are currently reading a marriage devotional by James and Shirley Dobson. It is titled "Night Light". We try and read a new one every night, and discuss what it means to us as a couple.
