I found a link a while back that has many uses for tires.  I bought the booklet last fall and I am going to try the composting.  It is supposed to be a nice alternative to turning the compost pile.  I have a composter I bought and have never had much success because it is so messy to use.

Here is the link, I think it is a great idea!

Thanks for the link. My husband is a truck tire salesman. That will come in handy.

Are you saying rubber tires will degrade if buried in soil? Or are you saying the tire can be made into a composter?

The tires can be used to compost in, make cold frame beds and raised container gardening.  They also can be used to make planters, swings and other useful items.  I even think you can cut them up and make edging for the garden.  I just got their booklet last fall and found someone who had a bunch of tires I could take.  I am going to try the composting this spring and see how fast it works.  Check out the link above and they have some info on their site.

I've seen tires made into planters for potatoes and tomatoes. You plant the potato in the ground, and when it gets so big, you put a tire over it and add some soil. More potatoes will grow from the stem now covered in soil. Wait another 4 weeks or so, add another tire and soil, get more potato-lets.

We used to make planters out of tires when we lived behind my aunt and uncles house. My uncle was fixing cars up a lot and there were always tires everywhere. My aunt cut triangles out of the tire and turned it inside out and then painted them. They were really pretty actually..... wanders off wondering where to get some old tires.
