The Red Antway of the Navaho (Navaho Religion Series, Vol 5)
The Red Antway of the Navaho - Navaho Religion Series, Vol 5 Author:Leland C. Wyman In this book Professor Leland C. Wyman presents a thorough analysis of the various rituals, branches, and phases of a Navaho Indian healing ceremony, the Red Ant chant, along with reproductions of the sandpaintings used in it and a discussion of their symbolism. — Included also is the translation by the late Father Berard Haile of the most extens... more »ive origin myth of the chant ever recorded and an analysis of other briefer legends of the same chantway.
Since the myth begins with the story of the emergence of the Ant People from the underworlds, Professor Wyman has also presented an analysis of all recorded versions of the general Origin Myth of the Navaho with tables of mythic motifs, which supplements his similar analysis of Navaho chantway myths published in 1962, The Windways of the Navaho.
Although there have been at least twenty-six ceremonial systems among the chantways practiced by the Navaho, only twelve have been analysed in substantial monographs. Of these, Professor Wyman, long recognized as an authority of Navaho ceremonialism, has contributed five, including this present work. Its contents are of interest not only to Navaho specialists, but also offer much to all those concerned with art, religion, and folklore.« less
