FOREWORD:

Despite its brevity The Red Badge of Courage is undoubtedly the finest novel ever written about the American Civil War. Ernest Hemingway called it also the truest, for it comes closer to capturing the grim reality of the combat experience than most firsthand accounts.

Young Henry Fleming -- "the youth" -- joined the Union Army filled with glamorous visions of great battles and heroic deeds. It was only later, on the long march to his first battle, that he began to wonder how he would react under fire, and whether indeed he would prove himself a man.

Soon enough he finds himself in a fire fight -- muskets spitting flame, shells exploding all around him. a bugle sounds the charge... and so begins the youth's passage into manhood.

The Red Badge of Courage was published in 1895. At the time he wrote it Stephen Crane was not yet twenty-two and he had never seen a battle. He had a much older brother, however, who had fought in the battle of Chancellorsville, and it was this old soldier's stories of the fighting and of army life that stuck in Crane's mind and became the raw material of the novel.

Crane was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1871. He was an early dropout from formal education and learned everything he had to learn as a writer while drifting around the country living a bohemian, hand-to-mouth existence. He became a newspaperman in New York and, later, a foreign correspondent. In addition to The Red Badge of Courage he produced a number of stunning shorter works -- notably "The Open Boat" and "The Blue Hotel." His genius promised great things, but five years after the publication of his masterwork he was dead -- of tuberculosis -- at the age of twenty-eight.

A great introduction to classic literature for young or reluctant readers. Great illustrations!
