Hah, and you thought the plots of Ross Macdonald starring Lew Archer were complicated. The twists and turns in this one shook up my grey cells, lemma tell ya. The Coens Brothers' 1984 film Blood Simple takes its title from a line in this rocker of hard-boiled novel. The Nameless Hero, aka The Continental Op(perative), asserts the vicious blood-letting has an adverse effect on his mental equilibrium: "This damned burg's getting to me. If I don't get away soon I'll be going blood-simple like the natives."
