"Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge which is located on the subtropical barrier island of Sanibel in the Gulf of Mexico. The refuge is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States and is world famous for its spectacular migratory bird populations.
After moving to Sanibel Island in 1982, the author became an active volunteer at the Refuge, and has worked in the visitor center, as a roving interpreter for visitors, and as a member of the board of directors of the "Ding" Darling Wildlife Society.
