If you are a Stephen King fan, Richard Bachman (wink, wink) will not disappoint you. The story is engrossing and confusing at first and you may (or may not) wonder what the Hell is going on (this will make sense if you've read enough King) but all comes together in the end and you are left with an appreciation of the author's creativity.

The story is an original and I'm looking forward to reading "Desperation" as well.

The only thing that doesn't quite fit is the red van idling just up the hill. Soon it will begin to roll, and the killing will begin. A quite slice of American suburbia is about to turn to toast.

This is the companion volume to Stephen King's "Desperation", and is a great read when considering most of the characters appeared in "Desperation", too, although here they are in a completely different setting but battling the same enemy. Think of it as parallel universes with a common menace, and you'll latch on to the gimmick of "Desperation" and "The Regulators". I haven't heard that this is King's best work, but it is certainly engaging and involves his usual ensemble of characters battling against a demented, weirdly evil foe. This was a fun and thrilling read, with shocks of graphic violence interspersed in the tale of a power so evil and so great that it can bend the very fabric of reality itself. At times the situation feels hopeless, as if the characters are doomed, but the resolution and ending of this book make the arduous journey worthwhile.
