Torture - I prefer the writing styles of Christina Dodd & Stephanie Laurens. Ms. Woodiwiss uses five words for every one, as if blocking a script, leaving nothing to the imagination of the reader. I feel quite condescended to. Wonderful story, but a shame it's written this way. This one should be speed-read if at all.

This was a great book. Woodiwiss always adds the right amount of chivalry and romance without getting to nasty. As in all of her books...love overcomes all!

A Woodiwiss gem. The heroine is brave, resilient and determined. The hero refuses to submit to a course charted in their childhood and agrees to a trial courtship in which he will convince both himself and Lady Adriana that love cannot be forced. He is soon shown the error in his judgment and finds his would be bride irresistible.

honestly I am having a hard time reading it. It is very detailed and some information I just don't enjoy reading about for example fabric and designs of furniture. But I am determined to get through it, maybe. It just isn't my cup of tea.

A bold and breathtaking tale of a beautiful noblewoman who is coveted by every high-born gentleman in the land - except the only man she could ever love.

I kept trying to get interested in this book, but just couldn't. The Point of View kept jumping from character to character, so I had a hard time keeping track of who was who, let alone who was thinking what. The first part of the book draaaaagged, in such a way that after a good 100 pages, the characters hadn't moved. It was immensely frustrating to follow and I eventually gave up.

The actual story was pretty good, altho I could have done without all the sexual parts. Lynn Redgrave reads this and I'm not sure it was the best choice. But I did enjoy it for the most part.

Prodigal son Colton Wyndham returns to his home in England after fighting in the Napoleonic wars. His father, with whom he had a contentious relationship, has recently died, and Colton is the new Marquess of Randwulf. He enjoys flashing his "dark, shining orbs" at his beauteous neighbor, Lady Adriana Sutton, while in the throes of "manly imagination," "manly awareness" and "manly cravings." Upon discovering that his late father signed a betrothal agreement linking him to Adriana, Colton is torn between rebelling against his father's dictates and succumbing to his desire for Adriana. Adriana, still wounded by Colton's vehement declaration years ago that he would not wed her, fears that Colton will break her heart again and is determined not to fall prey to his charm. The mating dance starts slowly, but the introduction of a poisoning expert; a baby switching; and Colton's lowborn first wife, thought to be dead, keeps the plot lively.

From Publishers Weekly
The hardcover debut of historical romance doyenne Woodiwiss (The Flame and the Flower) recalls the era of romance writing when a hero could be said to sport his "fleshly horn" or "bold blade of passion" with no trace of irony. Some readers may find the prose a bit overblown ("she strove to unmount the iron-thewed thigh"), but the racy escapades are as entertaining as ever. The prose is overwrought even by Woodiwiss's standards, but there's plenty here to amuse fans.
