  Chapter 8:

Maggie felt nervous and out of place and she was thankful when Caleb walked back over to where they were standing. He gave Maggie a puzzling look and asked her if she was okay.
“Im fine, Im just really tired from the trip.”
“Okay, lets get you home then.” She turned to Sammy and without wanting to look into her eyes said, “It was nice to have met you,” and she started towards the truck. She heard Sammy say something back to her but she couldnt quite make it out., because she had already closed the truck door.

Maggie was quiet on the drive home. Her mind was racing and she couldnt keep up with her thoughts. She needed to calm down. She looked over at Caleb to make sure he wasnt paying any attention to her and grabbed two pills out of her purse and quickly swallowed them. After a few more moments of silence, she said to Caleb, “So, if you dont mind me asking, where did you meet Sammy?”
“Actually, I work at a hospital, and I met her there.”
“Oh, do you work with her?”
“No, uh, she's a patient,”, he said with hesitation.
Was she sick? Maggie wondered. Before she could ask another question, Caleb said, “I shouldnt really be telling you this, but, I work at a Psychiatric hospital. And she was there for awhile and now she is in outpatient.”
Maggie felt embarassed for asking, but was also curious to find out more about Sammy. She stayed silent until they got back to the apartment. They parked in front of the building and Maggie hopped out. Caleb helped her carry her groceries into her apartment. As soon as they opened the door, Keeper ran towards them, wagging his tail and barking. Maggie gave him a little pet and then started unpacking bags. Caleb walked into the living room and turned around and said, “Dont you have any furniture?”
“No; actually I dont. Thats the first thing I plan on doing tomorrow is furniture shopping.”
“Well, it just so happens that I have the day off tomorrow. If you'd like, I can take you around town and show you all the hot spots for great used furniture.”
She had been thinking about Sammy and didnt realize that Caleb had even said anything to her.
“Hello? Did you hear me?”
“Im, sorry, I guess Im just really tired. Yes, that would be great, and thanks for helping me tonight.”
She looked up at him and he was staring at her, giving her a charming smile.
“I'll let you get your rest. I'll come by around noon.”
He walked towards the door. Before he tunred and left, he said, “Goodnight Miss Maggie, sweet dreams.” And he was gone.
Maggie finished unpacking her things, grabbed a soda and sat down on the floor. She was absorbing in the evening. Everythinghad seemed to happen so fast. Meeting Caleb, then going to the store with him, and then finally meeting Sammy. She wondered how all of this could be happening to her so quickly and so suddenly and why was it happening? What had sparked all of this? And the strangest thing was meeting Sammy. Could it be that she is the little girl in the picture named Amanda? And why was she in a psychiatric hospital? Maybe, she thought; she should call her aunt in the morning and just ask her straight out if she has a sister that she has never been told about. But then, if she did, why was it that she didnt remember her?
Her mind was chaotic and cluttered. She needed to find out more about Sammy.
She decided to take a quick shower and try to get some rest. She would have to sleep on the floor tonight with just a blanket and a pillow, but at this point, she really didnt mind.
After her shower, she laid down and Keeper curled up next to her. She closed her eyes and tried to sleep. All of the events of the day kept spinning through her mind and it took her a long while until she finally drifted off to sleep. In her dreams she saw Sammy. She was standing in a dark hallway, and there was just a sliver of light behind her. She was holding a blanket. Something was wrong. She was crying. A man was coming towards her telling her everything was going to be okay. She looked petrified. She kept saying over and over again, “Where's mommy?” and then she would say, “I want Maggie!”
The words echoed in Maggie's mind while she slept. She saw the man take Sammy by the arm and pull her towards him. He was dragging her down the hallway and the further they got, the less light there was, until everything was dark. Her dream faded to blackness.
When she woke up the next morning, there were tears in her eyes.
