can someone help.. I read it in the early/mid 90s

It was (but I'm not sure) written by Paol Anderson

The plot is about a people aboard a spaceship that is sent from earth (possibly 2) to colonize a far away planet (the second ship may or may not have been destoryed in an accident or some sort of terrorism).  The planet they arrive on is pretty barren but they manage to survive even begin mining for minerals with huge machines.  As the book goes along time goes by in the story faster and faster.  By the end of the book a few of the main characters end up in a world thousands of years after the ones they were born and lived in.  I believe they find out that these people they meet who now live in space, not on the planet they help colonize, (all soft and skinny from years in space) are their decendants.  There's also galaxies that talk to each other like living entinties as a side story in the book.

It was a fairly thick book in size.

Anyone know what I'm talking about.  Again, my memory is a bit fried here and I don't usually read Sci-Fi...

thanks in advance.

Was it a fairly new book at the time?  I've read a number of his books, but mostly the pre1970 stuff.  The only two I can think of that might fit are The Boat of a Million Years (1989) and Starfarers (1998 - maybe too new?).  I haven't read either, so I'm not 100% sure.  The Boat of a Million Years is the longest of Anderson's books that I know of (over 500 pages in paperback) though the descriptions don't say anything about colonization.  I have it, but just haven't read it yet.

It's not Starfarers.  It was a story mostly about colonization and there were more people on the ships then ten.  Also, it's not Boat of a Million Years.   It was a story that only took place in the future not the past.

I think I read the book in 1995 or 1994.

In that case I doubt the author is Poul Anderson, but he did write too much for me to be sure.  If you're interested, here's his page from fantasticfiction.com: http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/a/poul-anderson

I've read this book or one like it . I will have to look at my bookshelf at home to see if its still there

one book there are two colony ships , one goes out first and the other arrives a year or two later to find that something has gone wrong.

another book  (i'm doing this from memory which like you know can falter after reading a few books) the colony ship runs into trouble , can't remember if its political or what but the leadership changes and the colonist have to vote weather to stay and establish what was a planned colony or move on to another better site for a colony.

I will look to see if its still on my shelf.
