I'm looking for help remembering the title/author of a book I read probably 15-20 years ago about a boy who ends up (runs away?) in the Appalachian Mountains, where he lives for a couple years learning survival skills. I think he lived in a large hollowed-out tree, learned to kill deer using deadfalls, learned to tan deer hides for clothing, etc. Not sure if it was based on a true story or not. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm trying to pass on some books to my 8yo who loves to read. Thanks to anyone with ideas!

Hatchet by Gary Paulson?  I'm not sure if all the details fit, but it's about a boy who survives a plane crash and learns how to survive on his own.

It sounds like My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George to me.
