It appears to sort them by # of copies in system.  So if a book has 0 copies and then someone posts 1-it would be close to where the WL books start.  If there's already lots of copies in the system and someone adds one then it probably won't really move much up or down the line.

You can set it to sort by availability ascending or descending.  You cannot sort it by most recently posted to the system becasue that's probably not a really helpful sort for the RL.  If there's already copies posted then the most recently posted one wouldn't matter because the system works on FIFO. If there's no copies then the most recently posted one will probably be ordered pretty quickly or it's WL and so cannot be ordered from the RL.

I would suggest sorting your list by available books, and ask for ascending order.  All your zero available books would be at the beginning, and when you figure out where your "break" is, that is, where your books start to become available, just start looking around there each time you check.  Your newly available books will be listed as 1 available, and those would be the newest ones ready for you to order.  My reminder list has zero, all the way up to 37 copies available...(I keep books posted for the children, and use them as rewards for good stuff, and they can see what is available, and decide which one or ones they want the most.)

Hope this helps!

Marcia - The list is sorted by number of copies available. So let's say Book 123 has 123 copies in the system and Book C has 5 copies...if 10 copies of Book D are posted tomorrow, they should be listed as follows (sorted descending):

  1. Book 123 (123 copies)
  2. Book D (10 copies)
  3. Book C (5 copies)

However, if Book C has 99 copies then it will be like this:

  1. Book 123 (123 copies)
  2. Book C (99 copies)
  3. Book D (10 copies)

In the case of ties, I'm not sure what's the tiebreaker because I just checked my RL with a bunch of books that have the same number of copies available (0 in this case) and they are not ordered by title or by author.

If out of 500 books in your RL, just 100 are available now, that means that if you sort by Availability Descending and check page #3, it should give you the list of books with the fewer copies posted so most likely that's where the books that become available will be. That is, assuming that only 1 or 2 copies will be posted of that book and not like my example above where you'll get 10 posted at once of a book that was previoulsy not available.

If you are looking to order the ones that have the fewest copies: then I would sort by Availability with the WL books on top adn then scroll down to find when the books with only 1 or 2 copies start-then you can order those as you want before they become WL books.

No, that is not what I am asking.

It will automatically resort it when you open PBS. That is where the cookies in your computer come in, and why your preferences arent saved when you clear your cookies from your computer.

When you open the site and when the server refreshes every 15 minutes or so, the lists will remain current. That is also how we know we have a PM or when someone orders a book while we are on line or signed off the site. It is not static, the site is fluid, and is live time

The Books will fill in where they fit in the preferences you have set.

Does that make sense?

I dont think they are sorted in any other order, either by author, title or anything other than randomly.

We were all talkign about the RL.  When we say WL books we mean books that have  WL line but you ahve them on your RL.

You cannot sort the RL to have it show the books that were recently posted into the system on top or in any specific order.  You can search it by availability an then it will group all the ones that are 0 in the system and possibly WL on one end and then in order of # posted.  It won't show you which books were posted into the system recently because if they were WL  then they've already been offered to someone and if they were already available in the system then you wouldn't get that most recently posted copy anyway (unless they were very few copies posted).

You can sort the RL so list them in the order that you added them to your RL. You can tell it to show you the oldest ones added first or the newest ones.  But you cannot sort it to show you them in order that they were posted into the PBS system.

Like Cheryl said-it will put all the books in line based on how you ahve it sorted: If you come on and sort it by availability then everytime you log on and go to your RL it will show you the most current listing of the order you chose. It won't let you know which ones have changed-you have to search through the list to find that yourself.

Like someone else said-you might have to resort if you clear your history, cache, cookies or whatever and the computer forgets how you wanted it sorted.

On the Reminder List, when you sort by Availability, the books are always in order of how many copies are available. So, if you add books to your RL that are available, when you look at your RL (sorted by Availability), it will always be in order of how many copies are available.

When I sort by availability, are the 13 new titles now added to the beginning of the list?  Or do I have to hunt until I see which ones don't match from yesterday's sort?

Again, if you sort them by availability, they will be sorted by # of copies so any new books you add could be located before, after or in the middle depending on the # of copies. So let's say you have right now 3 books in your RL and you sort them by available descending (the number of the book state the # in the system)

  1. Book 79
  2. Book 58
  3. Book 3

Then you add the following books to the list...books 1, 33, and 87 and when you sort it by availability descending they will be added as follows:

  1. Book 87 (new)
  2. Book 79
  3. Book 58
  4. Book 33 (new)
  5. Book 3
  6. Book 1 (new)

So if you want to know the availability of books you just added, you should sort them by date descending - that shows the books sorted by the dated you added them to your RL.

Marcia, unfortunately, I think that the new 13 are buried within the list, because I think it is a random sort of all "tied" available books.  So all 67+13 books with one copy available are listed in random order...

Now you might see my dilemma... I don't remember all the 67 from yesterday and I don't want to mark them all with a note... but now I want to find the 13 that I added from today.

Marcia - If you sort them by date descending as I explained above, you will get the books that you added more recently at the top of the first page.  So in this case, the 13 you added today will be listed first, then the 67 that you added yesterday will follow and then the rest of the books you had.

So for instance, I just added a book to my RL. When I sorted it by date descending, that particular book came up first in the first page. It doesn't list the date I added it to my RL but the system keeps track of the date somehow and sorts it by that.

I think she wants to sort them by availability and when they were posted into the system.  It won't do that.  You will just have to decide to either sort by availability and scroll to see which books might have gone from 0 to 1 (or more) available or sort by date added to your RL.

No, ordering by date is not what I want to do.

I think it just puts them in randomly.  I have never played with it but on mine I don't notice any sort of pattern to books that have the same # available.  I usually sort it by date added although at this pt my RL is a mess.

It looks as if you would like two sort levels -- to be able to sort first by availability, and then, within that, by date added.  You could go down to the the bottom right corner of the page, and under "company" click on "contact us."  Use the Feedback option to offer this suggestion for future programming projects.
