Is there some reason (useful or otherwise) why titles and/or authors are repeated exactly on the PBS system (for instance, "Dust from the Sea", Author: Douglas Reeman, Douglas Reeman).  I plan to clean them up whenever I get a chance.  Does anyone else get irritated having to read redundant information?  Does anyone else get irritated having to read redundant information?

I've wondered about that but my mind skims past it.

I'm on the Data Corrections team and the Image Corrections team because these little database errors and redundacies  bother me so much. LOL  They are a result of the formatting used by the data sources utilized by PBS.  They have these errors and when we upload information from them, we get the errors as well.  (Amazon data source is a HUGE culprit.)

But you don't have to be an official member of a team to help out.  We are always encouraging members to submit corrections to the database to help us clean it up.  So please do keep up with your plan to add cleanup submissions whenever you can.

There are so many examples of this problem.  The comic/graphic novel/manga category is notorious for repetition that way.  It seems MOST of these titles come with the format Title, Vol X (Title Repetition).

Here are some tips for those who want to help out:

YES!!!  I am very compulsive and detail oriented, so that stuff always gets me.  I always submit corrections when I see it - I've even submitted corrections if the title of the book was correct but was typed in all caps.  That stuff bugs me.

I'm so glad to know that stuff bothers other people, too.  Now I think I'll start submitting corrections when I find things like that--the only reason I didn't before is because I don't like to prove to people just how picky I am!

I did once realize I'd made a typo in a book description, and I let it go! My idea of a "walk on the wild side" - ha ha!

There is nothing more satisfying than submitting a correction and then seeing the correction made (yes, I do go back and check).  I feel like all is right with the world again.  Until I look down at my desk and see that my pencil is no longer parallel with my stapler and then I feel so empty inside.  :)

Put me in the OCD, I mean detail oriented, group. I go in streaks. If I find one annoying thing, I check all of that title or author for the same mistake.

Sort of related question, why do the books added without a ISBN stay in the system after that book is ordered or removed from the member's shelf? I was searching by authors name and found many short ISBN, really horrible listings. I did not have time to try and fix them and wonder if I should since the books are no longer in the system. It is noted in the back of mind that it needs fixed but....some of these have nothing, including the title right. GRRR...now it is bugging me again.

An open invitation exists for all OCD Detail Oriented Members to join the data and image teams! We can always use help. But, there is absolutely no obligation at all. Neither the data nor image team requires anything from you, no check ins, no time commitments, nothing. However much you want to do, as little or as much, and whenever, is all up to you. We never dictate, tho occasionally I've been known to ask favors or give encouragments for projects, but there is never any hard feelings, resentment, or criticism for those that don't participate in something that's happening.

I am the Co-ordinator for the data team, and sarradee (Sarra B.) & hockeygal4ever (Beverly P.) are the co-ordinators for the imaging team, but the proceedure for signing up is the same whether you want to be on one or both teams. So, if you send me a PM, I will gladly give you the instructions on how to get on the teams.

The only difference between being a regular member doing data edits, and a member of the team, is that on the team, when there is a problem or something new, you have a heads up first. It's also the first step in becoming an approver, should you be interested in the future.

I highly encourage you to sign up for both teams, even if you don't plan on doing much on one or the other, because they often go hand in hand, and by being on both teams, you have the advantage of getting inside info and knowing when there is a problem or specific activities going on.

Well, I notice the Douglas Reeman book now has him listed as the author 3 times rather than 2.  Is a triple redundancy better than a double one?

Isn't that the trick to help you remember someone's name? Say it 3 times?

after i finish reading a book or a series, i try to make sure all the info is correct before i post it. im the person that wants to see which book # in a series the book is. so i try to update so that all books from that series look the same

Title (Xyz Series, Bk ?)

that way there is no guessing which one you should read first or anything like that

Again, I encourage members that wish the database was more accurate and consistant to join the teams for both DATA and IMAGES. We welcome you with open arms and always take time to help you learn the steps necessary for getting the hang of whichever team you decided to join, or both, since so many feel they go hand in hand and really feel strongly prompted to join both when they join one.

While I am only the co-ordinator for the Data Team, the process is the same for both teams and can be done at the same time.

To become an official volunteer on the image or data correction teams, it's as simple as going to the PBS Non-Disclosure Agreement link at the which I will PM you if you ask for it, reading the agreement, and submitting your virtual signature. Then select Contact Us at the bottom of that web page and click the FEEDBACK button to tell PBS whether you want to be on the image team, data team, or both.

Once you have submitted the NDA & your feedback, PBS will send you an email and add the Image and/or Data forum(s) to the Discussion Forums page above the Chit Chat groups.

After you have the topics, if you have asked to be on the data correction team, you will find a repeat of my guidelines and a sticky topic from Richard. You will also find a topic called Stand Up and Be Heard and Counted! Please post there if you are on the data team so that I know when you have access to the forums.

The image team also has a couple sticky posts with guidelines and assistance. Although they do not ask for an announcement, it would be great for you to post and introduce yourself there as well.

The only difference between being a regular member submitting data edits, and a member of the team, is that on the team, when there is a problem or something new, you have a heads up first. It's also the first step in becoming an approver, should you be interested in the future.

Also, I recommend joining both teams since they go so hand in hand, when you look up a book to find it's cover, you often will find its description, so might as well grab it too, and vice versa. This way you will have access to reading and learning the guidelines for data and image submissions both. So, in your feedback, you should state that you would like to be a member of the both the data & image correction teams, unless you really don't want to deal with the other, but there are no minimum requirements for either team, it is simply a way to make sure you CAN do what you want IF you want to :)

Send me a PM for the Non-Disclosure Link

And welcome in advance!!!

For audiobooks could be that the author is listed twice for being the narrator also (though not indicated as such)?

The other thing that drives me batty is when the name shows up with and without a period following the initial.  Like John W Smith and John W. Smith.  The system indexes them separately.  Argh.

ETA:  There used to be a single link to the check author link page.  Where members go through the author listings to get the data right.  Now we have to go through two links.  It is hidden under Member Tools.  Is this change slowing down the editing?  Are less folks doing it?

"Until I look down at my desk and see that my pencil is no longer parallel with my stapler and then I feel so empty inside."

That pencil better be evenly sharpened all the way around Lisa, or I'll have to come and fix it.  No lopsided pencil points allowed!
