I received a request for a book today that has the follow Requester Conditons.
I am not willing to accept books that have been or currently are in a smoking home or smell of mold, mildew or pets due to allergies. Thank you.
While we are a smoke free house, we do have a cat. However, this book has been stored in my bedroom book shelf and the cat seldom goes in there. It certainly doesn't smell like cat. I am not sure if I she means she doesn't want any books that have been in a home with pets, or just doesn't want them to smell like pets.
Should I refuse due to conditions?

I would refuse. You have a pet, and while you say the cat is rarely around your books, you don't know how sensitive an allergy this person has and you certainly would want to avoid potential problems.

She didn't word it very well did she.

I personally would accept the request and then send her a PM telling about the book. If she does not want the book, tell her to go to her account page and click on cancel order. If she wants it, have her PM you back to let you know to print and ship it. This way it is her decision.

I would also let her know that her wording is very confusing and she might want to rephrase it if she means any book in a pet owning household.

To be honest I'd cancel...while you and your household do not smoke it is a used book that is unless you received it new..because she states "I am not willing to accept books that have been or currently are in a smoking home"

I'd cancel since it has been in a house with pets.  If in doubt then dont send is how I work things.  Plus I dont wish to ever hurt anyones health.

It does sound like she doesn't want anything that has ever been around a pet. I had one somewhat similar recently, although the RC's didn't sound quiet as adamant to me. I accepted but PM'ed the requestor and told them that I had a cat but she was never around the books. The person decided to take the book anyway. I have to say though, I would probably not have accepted this one. It sounds like this person means no exceptions.

Since it  is a health issue, I'd cancel -- cat owners know cat fur/dander gets all over the place, no matter where the cat goes or doesn't go.

When you decline based on RCs, you'll have to say why you're declining, and that's a good time to provide positive, constructive criticism on the RCs, such as how they are confusing and why.

Cheers,

Catt

Thanks for all your replies. I think I will cancel and maybe PM her after. Those are very good points about her sensitivity and allergies, and as some of you mentioned, there is always cat dander (and hair) in the air.

It doesn't look bad if I cancel for not meeting RC requirements, does it?

Thanks again for helping to clarify my thinking!

Not meeting RCs looks bad.  Turning them down if you are not sure you can meet them is responsible.

I dont think it makes you look bad if you cancel and say "I have a cat so I dont meet the RC"  Least that way the person knows you read their RC :)

I declined this request and put as a reason that I had a cat and although the book didn't smell like cat, I didn't want to take a chance that the requestor had meant not from a house with a pet . I was then going to PM the requestor, but got interupted and just got back to the computer. I can't find the cancelled request in my transactions, but I currently have another request for the book with the follow RC:

I am not willing to accept books that have been or currently are in a smoking home. Also, if books smell of mildew or smell excessively of pets, due to allergies.  Thank you.

This is very similar to the first request, but is reworded to clarify if it smells like a pet. Do you think this is the first requestor again, or someone different? Also, why can't I find the cancelled request in my transaction list? It was about an hour and a half ago. Is there a lag time before it shows up? I am not sure what to do now. Wait and see if the cancelled transaction shows up to PM that person, or cancel for RC reasons on this one, or accept this offer and then PM this requestor?

Sorry, but I am confused!

I have similar RCs, I'd deny her request, just say you have a cat in house.

Yes, I've lost a few books where I thought the sender read too much into my RC, but in the long run, I've been happier. I don't mind getting denied at all....but there was a time when many reponses or reasons for denial were really rude.....I do have my email address in my RC, in case the sender has a question, I don't ask them to contact me, I just say they can. This has worked out very well for me.

Did you get the book new or used?  If it is used I would deny the request because the RC states "books that have been or currently are in a smoking home."  if it is a used book you do not know its history so, I would decline.

Yes, to me it looks like she rephrased her RC a tat so, I think maybe it got resent to you.

Looks like your book meets the reworded RCs unless you bought it used. It appears to me like the person responded to your decline by clearing up the RCs so you could see that just having a pet doesn't matter. What part of the RC do you not meet now? Most of us with RCs are not petty, picky people. It looks to me like she/he just wants to avoid really stinky books.

the site won't let me reorder the same book from the same person, even if I've changed my RC's - believe me, I've tried!

It's a new change from earlier this month.  You can now change or turn off your RCs and rerequest the same book.

And the earlier offer won't be in your transactions archive.  It doesn't become an official transaction until you accept.

I had to decline an offer last week because of a mixup with the ISBN (my hardback had the same ISBN as the listed paperback). When the request came to me and I checked it over I realized the mistake, so I cancelled it. (Said I couldn't mail the book and then sent a PM about the mixup.) That cancelled order is in my transaction archive. It was a wish list transaction, if that makes a difference.

Do requests with RC's have a different order sequence?  BTW, cancelled book transactions due to RC's no longer show up in your TA. They might have at one time, but they don't now. Oops. Sorry, missed that the first time.

By the way, I did purchase the book new many years ago, so it is the pet issue that I am worried about. Maybe since she reworded her RC I will accept and then PM her so we are both clear on our meanings.

Sorry to ask so many questions, but am trying to learn the ropes around here without hanging myself!

My stock answer for that type of RC is "I received this book used, and cannot guarantee it has never been around smoke."  Short and factual, and I've not yet (knock wood) had a problem from it.

They always smell fine to me, but maybe my nose is not sensitive enough.  Most of my books come from the used book store or garage sales anyway, so who knows where they have been.
