I just saw Bertie's search for a book and how you all helped her narrow it down...and I would love some help finding the name of a book that's driving me crazy...it feels like it's on the tip of my tongue. I read it a couple of times, at least. Something in it just struck a chord with me, I guess. Not a deep book by any means but something I, for some reason, have a yearning to revisit.
Here's what I remember:
It's Pre 2000, maybe before 1997
One of the series romances--harlequin or silhouette, probably. Maybe one of the more sensual lines.
A woman and her son move from California(?) back to a small town in New England to a deceased relative's house. The house is haunted by a revolutionary war ghost. I can't remember if he was a traitor or a hero--I guess it depends what side you root for, though, lol. The town is still very involved with their revolutionary war ancestors actions for some reason. The ghost and her fall in love and clear his name. They had a picnic out in the woods and found a diary in a tree and that diary evidently cleared him. There was a mystery with the townspeople and why they wanted her out of town...then she and the ghost somehow rescue a schoolbus of kids. It ends with him leaving this plane of existence and she argues with and convinces some kind of beings(angels?) that he's more mortal than ghost now since she's pregnant(?) I think. Pretty far fetched, lol, and maybe I'd hate it now that I'm older and wiser
Pretty sure on the cover he's in his uniform, embracing her and possibly a fireplace or else them outside at a mailbox(?) okay now I'm confusing myself
It's almost impossible to find descriptions of some of the older series books and i've searched until my eyes are sore. Does this one sound familiar to anyone?
Thank you so much for helping in any way!

Finding descriptions of older series books is easy! Go to fictiondb.com.
This sounds like one of Elizabeth August's Smytheshire series... but not. Gonna do some hunting and get back to you...
I think Diane may have found it...
Synopsis for A Ghostly Affair reads:
"Did ghosts have black silky hair and piercing dark eyes? Were their bodies lean and hard? Emily Morrell didn't think so.
This book was published as a Harlequin American Romance and subsequently for their Babies & Bachelors USA line for the state of New Hampshire.
