Sorry, new here. If I'm leaving on vacation (things, like that)...

What am I supposed to do with this account? Is this the same thing as putting an account on hiatus?

HI Anna,

If you go to your Main Account page and chose Vacation Hold you can choose the dates to start and stop the hold on your account. And if you have any wishlist books that are on auto request, the system will order them for you so you wont miss any if your turn comes up. There are lots of details on this feature in the Help Center. Have a nice vacation! Cheryl

Hi there, welcome to PBS.  I've used the Hold option a number of times.  Here's some info for you.  Have a nice vacation.

If you are going to be away from home and/or email for less than 5 days:

  • You can keep your bookshelf available
  • Choose the latest mail-by date when you accept a request: you will have 2 days after that mail-by date to mark the book mailed.
  • If you will have access to email at least once every 48 hours, you will be sure not to miss any Wish List offers
  • If you will NOT have access to email at least once every 48 hours, you should set any Wish List items you are close to #1 in line for to auto-request (you have to have enough credits in your account to "cover" these)

If you are going to be away from home and email for more than 5 days:

  • Put your bookshelf on Hold to prevent incoming requests.
  • This will put your Wish List on hold too; if you want to set Wish List items to auto-request, be sure you have credits to "cover" them.

Why use the Vacation/Hold feature?

  • To prevent receiving requests for your books when you cannot respond
  • To prevent receiving requests for your books when you cannot send books out for any reason
  • Excessive cancellations of book requests will jeopardize PBS membership.
  • The Vacation/Hold feature also puts your Wish List on Hold
    • You can keep selected items (or all items) on your Wish List active by setting them to auto-request.

To use the Vacation/Hold feature:

  • Go to the VacationHold page:

    • From My Account: click the link "Vacation Hold" in the yellow bar at the top of the My Account page.
      • or click the Settings tab and click the "Vacation Hold" link in the yellow bar at the top of the Settings page.
    • From My Bookshelf: click the link "Vacation Hold" in the yellow bar at the top of the Bookshelf page.
    • From the Account Settings: click the link "Vacation Hold" in the yellow bar at the top of the Settings page.
    • From anywhere on the site: place your cursor over My Account in the toolbar at the top of the site, and click Vacation Hold in the menu that drops down.
  • On the Vacation/Hold page:
    • Choose the start date and end dates of your Hold from the options
        • If you choose a start date before the current date, your Hold will go into effect immediately
        • If you choose a start date after the current date, your Hold will go into effect at 12:01 AM ET on that date
        • Your end date means that your Hold will automatically end at 12:01 AM ET on that end date
    • Click
  • When your account is scheduled to go on Hold, an alert message (outlined in red) will appear on the My Account page, containing the start and end dates you have chosen.
    • You can adjust the dates of your Hold by clicking in that alert message
    • You can cancel your Hold by clicking and then clicking the "cancel hold" link on the Vacation Hold page.
  • When your account is on hold, an alert message (outlined in red) will appear on the My Account page
    • You can adjust the dates of your Hold by clicking in that alert message
    • You can remove the Hold by clicking in that alert message.
