Any good legal thriller is full of misdirection and surprise plot twists and this one is no different. Defense attorney Mickey Haller plays prosecutor along with his ex-wife Maggie McPherson, from the DA's office and investigator, Harry Bosch, LAPD. With all these wonderful characters and a crackpot defense lawyer, the roller coaster ride to justice is spectacular. Though the judge did get on my last nerve allowing the defense such leeway. I don't think he would have gotten away with most of his stunts in a real courtroom.

Either way, I plowed through this in one day. I just had to know how it ended. A surprise ending that wasn't really a surprise as it was setup early on if you were paying attention.

I was a little disappointed in Connelly's book - not as good as his others. Very slow through most of the first half, then a rushed consclusion.

Harry Bosch and his half-brother Mickey Haller team up to bring a killer to justice. Excellent story, combining two of my favorite Connelly characters. Told from the vantage point of both main characters in alternating chapters, the drama and suspense keeps moving throughout the book. So much so that you don't want to put it down for wanting to know what's going to happen next.

Another home run by Michael Connelly. Book 3 in the Mickey Haller series Connelly does a masterful job of writing, using first person when the chapters are more about Mickey, and third person when the chapters focus on Harry. This style works quite well. As the story progresses Harry calls in the services of his old girlfriend Rachel Walling, who blends into the tale quite nicely. Haller tries to use his own experience as a defender to anticipate all the moves of his opponent in court and most times is quite correct in his assumptions.

The plot is intriguing, the court scenes realistic and entertaining, and the characters are vividly portrayed. The surveillance details were informative and educational. From the opening scene to the final scene, the book held my interest and made me want to keep turning the pages to see what else happened. There were some places where the tension was very high and I thought I knew what was going to happen, but then something else happened instead. I would never have guessed the ending.

Definitely a book to read in one setting. You won't want to put it down.

Bleah! Really looked forward to another HB thriller. What I got is Harry taking a backseat to Mickey Haller, written in a confusing first/third person narrative and lackluster characters all around. Most of the Amazon reviews loved it, so, go figure...

Michael Connelly can write an extremely good book! Sometimes an author can make a courtroom scene so boring and so long you just have to skip most of it, but Connelly hit this one right and you just want to keep reading because it gets better and better

Another excellent book by Michael Connelly. This one if full of twists and turns, keeps you reading FAST! I enjoy how the court room portion is not too technical or long and the ending, although not what I wanted appeared somewhat more realistic than some authors nice little unrealistic endings.

This fine novel by Michael Connelly brings together half-brothers Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch on the same side of the case. The LA District Attorney convinces Mickey to move to the prosecution side as a special prosecutor in a 24+ year-old case. The California Supreme Court has reversed the 24 year-old decision; instead of dropping the conviction (for time served), LA decides to retry it.

Haller decides to go over to the dark side in the second trial of Jason Jessup partly because he can name his own team. He decides on his former wife, Maggie McPherson (a deputy district attorney), as second chair and Harry Bosch, as their investigator.

Jason Jessup has been busy in prison those 24 years, trying to get someone to listen to his cries of innocence through his motions and appeals. Jessup was convicted of abducting and strangling a 12 year-old girl, Melissa Landy. Finally, Jessup gets the interest of the Genetic Justice Project, a group of lawyers (who run DNA tests and find that there is no trace of Jessup on the girls dress --DNA evidence predates this case).

The characters are well-drawn, the dialogue is on-target and the mystery is suspenseful. The story was so compelling that I couldnt put it down. This is an exceptional, tension-filled story.
