author Barbara Paul

Larch, working temporarily and rather unhappily in the Ninth Precinct, is assigned by Captain Defalco to head the investigation into the deaths of four top-level employees of a laser technology firm -- all with some level of government security clearance. All were found murdered, handcuffed together and shot through the eye.

Hindered by a partner who resents her and an overly ambitious captain, Larch is coerced into working with two FBI agents brought in because of the victims' classified government connections.

The bizarre killings seem to be sending a warning, and Larch, with no other leads, is sure it's a warning to others in the organization. Hard questioning uncovers a second, supersecret project at Universal unconnected to Washington. It's clear the four murdered employees knew about something big -- and they paid a deadly price.

Sorry I missed this series when it first came out. The lead character, Sgt. Marian Larch, works out of a NY precinct saddled with a partner who's putting in his time and not thrilled about being partners with a woman. When faced with a quadruple murder she has to do battle with her own partner, her publicity loving captain, the major crimes squad who would love to take the case away from her and the FBI in order to solve the crime. A definite A+ for this one.
