If a package is less than 13 oz, I can just stamp it and leave it in my mailbox, right?

Probably. The regs let you do it, but some carriers won't take packages. If you know your carrier takes packages, stamp it and toss it in the mailbox.

what Melane said.    Where I live now - yes they take them - rural area PO employees use their own cars....when I was in the city - nope and they had postal trucks.

With the proper amount of postage, packages under 13 oz can be mailed from your rural box (most carriers pick up) or any blue box.   The exception may be packages with a different return address than the pick-up address.
