A really fine book describing the rise of the Chinese republic. Developing from the causes and failures brought about by the empire and the Western Nations attempting to "colonize" it. and how it gave rise to the revolution and finally the current "communist" form. Excelent book for anyone that really wants to know baout why China acts as it does and what brought it about with a minimum of bias and propoganda which seems to be our only approach to anything anymore.

engaging, well-done, modern history of China, over last 100 years. (1989 publishing date). Everything you always wanted to know about modern Chinese history, but never asked. Author was foreign correspondent during 40's in China.
