For all you Robert Jordan/Wheel of Time fans out there (like me!) you'll be thrilled to know that RJ's widow/editor, Harriett, has chosen the author who will complete the final book of the series, Memory of Light.  His name is Brandon Sanderson.  You can read all about it on RJ's blog: http://www.dragonmount.com/News/?m=200712

Personally, I am thrilled with this.  I've been reading these books since the very first one came about ... what was that, 17 years ago?!  I followed RJ's blog for the last several months of his illness and was devesated when I heard he died.  I KNEW they'd finish the last book somehow!

Has anyone read Sanderson's books before?  I put myself on the Wish Lists for all of them.  What do you all think? Is he a good choice?

I look forward to hearing the comments!

Honestly, I've never even heard of Sanderson before.  But I'm very glad to hear that the final book in the series will definitely be completed.  I'm curious too if anyone has read any of his stuff.

good to know! I love David Eddings - was reading him long before Robert Jordan started Wheel of Time.

I'm thrilled that Sanderson is doing it, and although nobody can truly do it the way Jordan could, Sanderson is a big fan of the series, a good writer, young and energetic, and I think he will do as good a job as anybody besides Jordan himself.  I've read all of Sanderson's published books so far, and I think he is a great storyteller with some very creative ideas.  I'm also thrilled that Wheel of Time is finally going to end.  I started WOT years ago and loved it, but stopped when the waiting for the next book got too tiresome.  I promised myself I would not read any more until the final book was done, then I would go back and read them all.

For any fantasy fans who haven't read Sanderson yet, I highly recommend Elantris.  In a way, Elantris is kind of an anti-Jordan/Goodkind/Martin type of fantasy in that it has the epic fantasy feel, but is a standalone novel, not the first of a seemingly never-ending series.  The concept and magic system are very original and cool.  And I really appreciated not having to wait for a sequel.

I also recommend his Mistborn trilogy.  Again, the concept and magic system are very unique and creative.  I can't wait until book 3 is out this coming year!

I have even read his young adult novel "Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians" and enjoyed it.  It is perfect for kids around 5th grade though maybe early teens, and even though it is a bit on the silly side, is fun for grownups as well because it is well-told and it all works in spite of the silliness.  Again, another very creative and original concept, magic system, and alternate reality.

Wow, thanks for the info.  I think I have Elantris on my TBR pile, I will need to dig it out.

Thanks for the info--I'm a big fan and I've also been wondering how they'd deal with this. I have Elantris on my TBR and will get to it soon, now. I think I also have the first Mistborn book here...can't remember for sure, my TBR is too freaking big. LOL

If you want a FREE taste of Sanderson's writing, go to his web site, brandonsanderson.com.  He has an unpublished book there called Warbreaker available for free download - no strings attached.  I've started reading it, and it's AWESOME so far!  He plans on publishing it officially in the next year or two.

Once again, he's got a very cool magic system, and some very creative concepts.  I've read and enjoyed all of his published stuff so far, and this freebie is every bit as good as those, if not better.  He's rapidly becoming one of my favorite fantasy authors.

I don't know if it's too late or not, but Tor books is offering free e-book downloads for signing up for their mailing list.  The first week's book is Sanderson's Mistborn book 1.  They're going to have a different free e-book download every week  for a while.  Here's the link:  http://www.tor.com/

Thanks for the link foodkid!  What a great offer from one of my favorite publishers!  Hmm, I wonder if they'll do a preview of Memory of Light when it is finally completed ... or maybe a prologue?!
