This isn't all that "hidden," because it's got a lot of ratings and reviews, but I just read and loved Room, by Emma Donoghue.  I hadn't heard of it until a couple weeks ago when a friend recommended it and loaned me his copy.  He didn't tell me much about it, except that I had to read it, because he didn't want to ruin anything for me.  So I'll extend the same courtesy.  (I didn't even read the back cover, or the summary that shows up on this site or Amazon.  If you want to know something about it before starting to read it, that doesn't give too much away, but I really enjoyed going in knowing nothing about it and discovering it as I read.)

The reviews are somewhat mixed, but the people who didn't like it seem to mainly dislike that it's written in the first person in the voice of a five-year-old boy.  (So the sentences are structured as a five-year-old would talk, etc.)  That did take some getting used to, but once you get past that, it's an engrossing book that I couldn't put down.  There aren't many novels I've read in one day, but when I decided to start reading this yesterday afternoon, I got so into it that I kept reading to the end.  And I can't stop thinking about it today.  I'm not sure it's the best book I've read recently, but it's definitely in the conversation.

I put it on my wish list last weekend and it popped up a day later, received it already,  can't wait to finish the Kate Morton book i'm reading to dive into this one, thanks for the inside scoop. Makes me even more curious about it.  (i did sneak a peek at the first 2 pages)

I read ROOM in 2011 for the fiction challenge and it haunted me, because despite the devastating abuse it was written about, there was a light innocence about it BECAUSE the POV was of the little boy's. i thought it was fantastic and the author did a great job of capturing the experiences of the main characters.

I read it and enjoyed it, so did my bookclub.  You do have to get used to the style but it was a good read.

You MUST try it in audio if you liked it that much and would like to revisit it.

I haven't read Room, but I've read most of Emma Donoghue's other books and I recommend them highly. Slammerkin was particularly wonderful.

I listened to Room as an audiobook. Though the story was a bit disturbing, I really liked it. I think it was particularly effective because it was told from the child's perspective. This approach forces the reader to see things differently, and so I was always deeply engaged in what I was reading. Understanding the mother's feelings, and living the experience through the filter of a child's mind as well, was a fascinating yet bizarre emotional synthesis. This was my first book by Emma Donoghue, and I thought she wrote a truly admirable book.
