Part 2 was painful to read - particularly the voyage on board the slave ship. It's hard to imagine treating people like that, even if the toubob did consider them inferior or even on par with animals. How could they have so little respect for life? I was so proud of the men when they learned to communicate with each other on the slave ship even though they spoke different languages and couldn't move or see each other! Amazing what humans can do when we are in circumstances that limit us. We find new ways to succeed and survive. Kunta's many attempts at escape were so frustrating. I don't imagine that I would have the fortitude to keep trying against those odds. I hated how he eventually gave up trying to escape. It's a catch 22 because you want to see him find some peace, even within the bounds of slavery, but it hurts to think that the toubob finally forced him to surrender any hope of freedom. Interesting how the some of the people didn't accept or even realize that they were descended from Africans!

I found myself rooting for Kunta's escape as well. I also kept hoping for them to be able to overthrow the tuobob on the ship! I knew, of course, that it wasn't going to happen that way, but I still wanted it to! I love how the men were able to communicate eventually, and how the women would "sing" information to the men. It seems kind of a foreshadowing of the spirituals that the slaves would later sing in the fields--I remember learning in history that many of them were actually "coded" ways of communicating with each other. |

I found this part harder to read. The horror for Kunta when he was kiddnapped and put on the ship. The months of being on the ship the horrible conditions. The treatment of the slaves whipping etc. Kunta attempts to escape and when he had part of his foot cut off. After years of being a slave finally knowing that he woud never see his homeland again. I loved when he married Bell and when Kizzy was born. How he chose Kizzy name.
