Author: Winston Graham
In 1783, tired from the end of a grim war in America, Ross Poldark returns to Cornwall, England, and to his land and family. But then he rescues a half-starved urchin girl and takes her home, an act which, it turns out, will alter his life.

Decades ago in the 70s, when I actually had TV, I watched the BBS series and thoroughly enjoyed it. I always wanted to read the books, but life had me busy elsewhere. When several of the first books in the series recently passed through my hands at a thrift store, where I volunteer, I snatched them up.

Yet, I put them aside, wondering if I would enjoy reading the stories I had seen on TV. But, like with movies, I found the books were even better than I remember the TV series. I hate to use the phrase, but I found myself "caught up in the (first) book" and read it almost straight through, despite having other books also open.

Graham makes the characters in the books seem like real people. Especially as the protagonists are not all extremely handsome or drop dead gorgeous, never make mistakes, and are not veterans of some special military force, like you read about in so many of today's New York Times best sellers. And while they have sex, the details aren't described on the pages.
