Accused of killing her husbands ex-wife, "Babmi" mad headlines in People, Vanity fair, the New York Times and the Washington Post. The daughter of a cop, Laurie was an outstanding student in her police academy class. One on the force whe was horrifed by the police improprieties she encountered- cops having sex with prostitutes, and selling drugs and pornography and she was removed from the Milwaukee PoliceDept for a minor violationl After the murder occured, Lauries husband was granted immunity and his testimony worked against her and aided in her conviction. Defended by a lawyer who was later, disbarrred, Bambi was convicted on what the presiding judge call eht most circumstantial evidence he had ever seen. Readers step inside a womens prison and the justice system and realize the frightening truth: What happened to Bambi could happen to anyone. On the evening of July 15, 1990, after 8 years in prison, Lauri squirmed through an eight inch opening in a laundry room wall and with the aid of her 34 year old lover, fled to Canada. the hunt was on. but in no time, the bumper stickers and T-shirts with the legend Run Bambi Run appeared everywhere. To the people Bambi was fleeing injustice and they urged her on. On Oct 14, 1991 a Milwaukee judge ordered a secret investigation into the circumstances to see whether she had been framed. At this time, she is seeking refugee status in Canada, claiming she was persecuted in the US.
