Hello All --- I know it may seem early, but I want to get started on sign-ups for the 2013 Secret Santa Exchange so I can get it all organized with plenty of time for all of you to make comments, decide to participate and ultimately get your packages in the mail.

What I need from folks who wish to "play" is your name, mailing address and a list of your most WISHED FOR books.  It seems we were going to go with a "books only" format unless your Secret Santa should decide to throw in a bookmark, etc.  It matters not to me what you put in your boxes, with a "books only" format it does keep postage in the Media Mail arena.  The limiting factor will be the spending limit!!!!  Should I find any of you not abiding by whatever spending limit we decide on, the wet noodle will come calling!!!!

In my initial post, I mentioned a $15.00 spending limit, but would love opinions from others as to the amount.  Nothing here is carved in granite.  This should be fun and not a burden.  So PLEASE give voice to your thoughts.  One of the main reasons to begin early is to refine this so it will be fun for ALL.

I will keep a running list in this forum thread of those who are participating.  Your address, etc. will be known only by me and your Secret Santa.  Please send your information via PM here on PBS.

I will use a random matching program for assigning partners.

Becky...I'm in!  Will send you the info once I decide on the books.  As a "newbie" to this, I have some questions and thought I would ask them here in case anyone else maybe had some of the same questions.

* How many books should I list!  Five? Ten?  More?  Less?

*Do these have to be new books?  I know some of them I really want would probably have to be used, since they may have been published ten yrs ago or more.  Probably, listing books that are readily available would be the easiest.

*What about RCs?  If they are used books, I would have no idea where they may have been or what smells they might have acquired.  (Since my sense of smell is almost non-existent, that's no help! LOL)  Personally, as long as they are readable and in reasonable condition, I'm happy!

IMO, $15 is a reasonable amount

Used books are fine as long as they meet posting guidelines on PBS.  As to "smells, etc." ---- if you are joining in and have allergy issues, please put it in your PM to me so that I can pass it along to your Secret Santa.

As to how many books on your list --- several, because your Santa might find some wonderful bargains at a used book store!!!  One can only hope!!

I would say that if you want a book with 200 folks on the PBS wishlist, your Secret Santa would need to buy it new, which is fine.  However, if there are books that are not such hot commodities, add those as well.

I'm in!

Some folks have an extensive wish list right here.  Maybe list your top five wishes and a suggestion to check the buddies wish list?

My wish list is small so I'll have to add some stuff.

What a good idea, Geri!!  That would make it easier.  Unfortunately, it won't work for me since probably 80% of my WL consists of books for dh!!  He won't read library books or mmpaperbacks, so put his books on the WL and figure I can come up with what I'm looking for eventually!!  And, if I am doing this, I darn well want something for ME!!!!  LOL

I really am going to get the info to you Becky!!  Didn't realize how many of the books I want are either British, published 10-12 yrs ago, or are just published in hardcover only!!!  Trying to make it reasonably easy for somebody!!

Alice --- Thanks so much for your encouragement.  Seems we have quite a few "regulars" missing in action for a bit.  Perhaps they will return soon and join the fun.

Okay All --  Please look at the list somewhere above and if you do not see your name, but you want to join the Secret Santa, please let me know soon.  Will be doing the random matching, etc. before too long so everyone has plenty of time to gather books and get them mailed.  I did have a question from someone as to whether a $15 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble would work.  Please give me your honest opinions --- as for me, I am back and forth on it.  Somehow it seems that actually getting a package is the fun of the whole process.  PLEASE let me know your opinions SOON.

Becky--I don't see your name on the list of participants--you are planning on joining us, aren't you? smiley

Regarding the gift certificate question--I'm with you back and forth--I could go either way.  I like the idea of getting a book in the mail, but on the other hand, having a gift card that I can spend on myself is fun too.  Sorry, I'm not much help in making a decision!

Yes, I will be on the list --- I was just waiting to see if we came out with an even or odd number of participants!!!  Right now we have an odd number, so I will even us up unless we get more Secret Santas to join us!!!

I think gift certs are ok - especially for those that want e-books - maybe they could send a message to Becky and let her know if they want one for B&N or amazon

It doesn't matter if it's even or not, I would imagine she'll do a blind draw.

I'm not a big certificate fan unless it's for something specific. Where it's to is important, nooks and kindles don't play together.

I'm going to chime in and say that I would rather look for the books myself for my Secret Santa. I think it would be more fun than sending a gift card. Also, on the receiving end, I love receiving packages through the mail.

Maybe when you do the draw you can say that this person wouldn't object to a gift card from... B&N or Amazon.

Indecisive, not really, I can go either way.  An actual book or an Amazon gift card.
