You don't have to use the Sony website or register the device. Ever. Yes you can put all your epubs on it and they will work (if they are Adobe DRM epubs, you will have to authorize it in ADE). I do not use the Sony desktop software. I use Calibre, but you can also just use your file manager on your computer to drag and drop.

Sounds like a good trade, go for it!

I like my T1 so much, I have a 2nd one coming. So I'll have 2 Kindle Keyboards and 2 Sony T1's. For one person. Possibly a little excessive! I'll decide later.

Barb, don't use it for anything other than ebook reading. I love mine but it's not a tablet nor meant to be one. Don't try to hack it. It can be complicated and you can brick it. It's got about 1.3 gig on line memory that you can use on the machine. You have ages before you need to worry about a card. Use calibre and not the Sony program. Seriously I think the Sony program is a waste of time to mess with. It's a great reader, but don't plan on doing much else.

I use Calibre to unzip my freebie & other sites [other than AWZ] ebooks.  So thats no problem.   Yes I think the trade will be good for both us.  She only reads in the evening But she still finding she needs internet during her work hours...  Where all I do is read 90% of the time & hop on the internet just to give myself read breaks here PBS another forum 1 email account LOL  I still have my laptop for that hehehehe     I find my e-ink K3 better for reading as much as I do that the LCD of the Tablet.  What I found strange I can read for 6  hrs on the Literati which is LCD but only 1-2 hrs on the Tablet before my eyes start hurting... crazy huh!

No Cindy Not a hacker hehehehe

You can use it to write notes in your ebooks, but the notes are saved seperately and not inside the ebook itself. There are programs you can find to get the notes off if you want.

I don't use the note feature for regular books. I've never been one to write in my books anyway. I do leave notes on Fanfic, (Delete, Save, Favorite) so I know when I go back in if I want to keep the story or not, but I just type that in. Then later look up the list and save/delete stories depending on the note I've left.

My handwriting is bad enough I wouldn't want to use that feature much. They keyboard is okay for short notes, but I wouldn't want to try to write a lot with it.

Barbara, no, really, I needed another T1. So when I saw one for $85 I jumped on it. It came today, and it's brand new. Nice!  So now I have one rooted, and one not.

Charge $50 for the tab+case if you don't take the reader. Otherwise, even swap I think. Or +10 if she has no case for it. (She can pay you, I mean)

We did an even swap... she did offer to pay 10 for my case nothing else LOL  I passed!  Sony seems to be working great tho I have a ways to go to figuring it out!  I am disapointed she didnt bring the reciept.  I gave her all of mine.   No case just the eReader & charging cord for the computer... ear thingy which I let her keep  thats it!   No Book or instructions on how to use it!

How do I remove ALL her information & take it back to Factory?  How do I register it in my name??

I have to say, the Sony is one that is perfectly happy not being registered. I hope someone can pipe in how to reset it to being blank.

And I think not being registered is a nifty idea. When I read that Kobo was releasing data on how many people had read how far in 50 Shades of Grey, my stomach just turned. I really do not want the eReader company to be able to track what books I'm reading or where I'm getting my books from. That is a little too much market research. I would love to be able to make sure my Nook never tracked me like that.

Do look on the Sony website to see if they have a PDF of the manual. Many companies do that now.

I love the idea of being Free to get my ebooks anywhere.  I been reading stories how Amazon get mad & just Bricks kindles from the owners!!  I get 99% of my ebooks free off different web sites one these days I afraid Amazon going to cut me off....  sigh

Looks like she had her wifi information on it I finaly figured out how to delete that LOL  She also put a Sample Patterson on it Need to figure out how to delete that ugh   Other wise I dont see anything else.   I LOVE the Library connection!   My 2 libraries are on my faves LOL   I figured out how to set the font But not how to make them stay so I seem to keep having to adjust them!   O and the writing thing is cool but How do you delete them??    I never hit save but they are there...all my playing around goofs!  LOL

Yes I go check for the guide!!

I need to ask What is the point of Hacking these ereaders??  Esp this one it goes on the internet fine ...what more do people want?

Here's a link on how to various resets on the Sony prs-t1

Here.

I'd do a Factory Reset. You don't want anything she did left on the device.

One tip on the instructions on a Hard Reset...

...and then, while you still pressed the next page and back button... release the back button, press the back button, release the back button...

The back button they're talking about is NOT the 'back button' you use when reading. They mean the "U-Turn-looking" button. I was stuck on that part for a while myself. Lol.

And no, I don't think you'll need to register it with Sony unless you plan on using the library once in a while. You can happily keep the wifi off and side-load books. Wifi will just eat power. I never have the wifi on mine, and I'm not sure I registered the one when I restored from hacking it. (Didn't care for the hack, so un-did it.)

The on-line manual is Here. Manual wise, I don't remember ever getting one in the box.

I been reading stories how Amazon get mad & just Bricks kindles from the owners!!

Hope not! I have a Kindle and haven't had any troubles with it. I have read stories where some people had their accounts canceled, but after a lot of questioning turns out they were doing hinky things with multiple accounts. Otherwise, I think they're just as reliable as any of the other stores.

She also put a Sample Patterson on it Need to figure out how to delete that ugh

So the Factory Reset and anything she did will be gone. You can plug it in to Calibre, (remember to click on the T1 screen to connect to the computer when it asks you to) and you can go inside the machine in Calibre or through Windows explorere and delete stuff.

If you want to put your own pictures on it, just create a file on the Sony, name it anything, then put JPG's in there. Then go into the second page of the main screen --> 'Settings' --> System Management --> Standby Screen. There you can chose to use your own pictures, or have it show the cover of the book you're reading (Last Read)

To set the font size (not all books will allow their fonts to be used) go to Then go into the second page of the main screen --> 'Settings' --> Application Preferences --> Books/Periodicals --> Font size Preferences.

As for Browsing and Library loans, I have no idea. Never bothered much with them when it wasn't hacked.

I need to ask What is the point of Hacking these ereaders??  Esp this one it goes on the internet fine ...what more do people want?

The Sony's and the Nooks run on Android, so they can run some applications just like Tablets. Only too slow to interest me. But people can use different readers, use the Kindle app on them, and check email. Some love 'em just for their Tablet use.

I got mine to hack it. I wanted to be able to use drop box on it, and read mobi as well as epub. After doing so, I decided I didn't like using it that way so I took all the mobi off and don't use dropbox. Calibre does what I need it to do.

The useful thing about the hack, for me currently, is the file management, folders, and subfolders that Coolreader let's me use.  But now that I have learned more about using tags and Calibre (thanks, Cindy!) that really isn't all that necessary.

Cindy, when you un-do the hack, does it affect the books on the device? It's not really a wipe, so they should all stay, shouldn't they?

I think it would depend on if you do a Hard Reset afterwards. Some un-hacks probably require it. A Hard Reset resets everything to Factory, so I wouldn't count on anything being left behind.

Just make sure you have a copy of everything on Calibre before un-hacking. Just to be safe. All you have to do is go into the Device while on Calibre, and anything that you don't think you have a copy of select and "Add Books To Library".

That should copy your Reader stuff over to your Calibre library. And if you have stuff on a card, take it out. I don't know if any of the hacks install on a Card, although I know some apps do once hacked. I'd just make sure Calibre had everything, then reload.

To reset, just go to Settings and then Restore Defaults.

Yes, it's all in Calibre. *sigh* I even have a custom device column that tells me everything that is currently loaded to the Sony. So reloading will be easy. If necessary. I haven't decided yet. Will use my new Sony a bit before I decide.

Well, comparing the two with books open, I think I will leave the hack. I have gotten used to the line at the top that shows author, title, page/page and percentage. I don't think there's a way to show percentage in the stock reader.

To reset, just go to Settings and then Restore Defaults.

IIRC that just restores the defaut settings on things the Sony lets you change. Like if you chose a Font size, or have selected certain pictures, or have changed other small settings that the Sony lets you set on the Setting's page. Sony has them all set a certain way when it's shipped, and as the owner you can go in and change them.

But Hard Reset is different. It resets the Firmware (the program) that runs the machine back to the original progam that it shipped with, or the latest Firmware update.

If you've hacked them, you've changed the programming that runs the machine. When the hack is removed, the original programming has to be restored for the Sony to run.
