I really enjoyed reading this, though I'm sure I made a hashed-up mess of some of the names while doing so. I know I also didn't remember all the names of each individual mentioned in this book, as there were so many, but none of the impact of the history was lost. The culture and events themselves were extremely interesting to read about.
A couple of things I found intriguing to read about was that the crown jewels in Japan have not been seen by human eyes for thousands of years, but instead are represented by replicas that have been made, lost, and remade. Another curious mention, is the Heike crab, with it's unique underside that looks like the face of a dead samurai warrior. I'd never heard of such a creature until reading this book.
The only thing I did find annoying was that the captions for many of the photos were just the same exact text that had been taken out of the paragraphs of information already given. I felt that there should have been more elaborations and less redundancy in this little factoids.
Overall, it was an amazing book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in this subject.
