ASIN B001BNDWTQ / ISBN 1577192389 - This book was never meant to be sold alone, so it's missing at least part of its charm if you get a copy without the stuffed Santa doll that it was originally sold with. The book, alone, deserves 3 stars and no more; the toy elevates it to a five-star set.
In simple text, the "narrator" asks Santa to please stay and play, just a game or two. Suggesting they play with his train or bike, or share cookies and juice, he makes an appealing case for Santa to stick around a while.
There's nothing too special in the book; without the toy, in fact, it's just barely a mediocre book. Author Della Cohen did all right, but with a mere 4 lines per pair of facing pages, and with two of those lines repeated 5 times, not a lot of writing was required. Kathy Couri, the illustrator, does a pleasant job with images that cover every page, edge to edge. Her drawings somewhat resemble watercolors, with all their imperfections. The thick, sturdy board book pages will stand up to much handling and glossy pages are easily wiped clean of sticky fingerprints. All in all, it's an okay book; it's a better book with the toy.
