I was wondering if anyone else who enjoyed "Water for Elephants" was disappointed by "Ape House"?

I read not only Water For Elephants but the other two books she wrote before that one.   I loved all three.

I've tried to read Ape House twice and I simply didn't like it.   I'll post it without finishing the book.  I always HATE when an author I love disappoints.

I think I will scratch that one off my wish list cool I'm at the far end of it anyway and it looks to be close to a 10 yr wait. Ha!

Yep, I recently listened to Ape House and was a little disappointed with it after reading WFE. But I must say that there was one point in the book I just wanted to totally give up. It seemed like it was going in a totally different direction and I didn't want to finish it. But I stuck it out and it did get better and more interesting. I still was pretty disappointed with it though.

Spoiler vent: It would have been way cooler if the focus had been on the apes and the way they were trained/communicated and their relationship with the scientists rather than the big explosion happenings and all of that jazz.

I really enjoyed Water for Elephants in print, and will always rate the audio as one of the best I've ever heard.  However, I hesitate to listen to anything else she writes  since listening to most of Riding Lessons, the beginning of  which seems copied out of The Horse Whisperer, and the rest sports the nastiest heroine I've yet to meet in a book.  Not a single redeeming quality, and we readers all know that even villans have one of those.  We didn't like anyone in the book.

LOVED Water for Elephants - liked Ape House - nowhere near as good as Water for Elephants - didn't recommend to anyone.  That says something, right?

I loved WFE - am currently reading AH - took me a while to get into it, I'm not CRAZY about it so far but I am hooked and I want to see what happens.  I think the writing in this one is sort of sloppy.  I don't understand how some of the human characters add to the value of the book.  I'll finish it in the next day or so, and who knows, maybe my opinion will change, we'll see.

Haven't read AH - HATED Riding Lessons and the sequel.   I got them for my mom because she loves fiction about horses and she couldn't stand them either.

I just finished Ape House and loved it.  I had read a lot of the negative reviews and was prepared not to like it.  I will say that I liked Water for Elephants more.

"Water for Elephants" will be one of my all-time favorites but "Ape House" probably not although I certainly did not hate it nor have any feeling as to not finishing it.  It just wasn't the same caliber of book as "Elephants".

I'm sort of in the same boat, Becky.  I loved WFE and I was sort of ho-hum about AH.  It was okay - not great, IMO.
