John J. Nance is the greatest adventure writer. He specializes in aviation thrillers but in this new book, the story focuses on one man's attempts to do the impossible......stop an earthquake.
Mick Walker has built a multi-million dollar resort on Cascadia Island, an area that seismologist believes to be unstable. Now as the opening of the new resort brings in all sorts of dignitaries, including the govenor, and Lam's fiance, pilot Jennifer, Doug must try to convince Walker and anyone else who will listen, that an 800 mile stretch of the Northwest may be facing an earthquake that could kill thousands, along with the tsunami that is sure to accompany it.
In this spookily timely new thriller by Nance (Pandora's Clock; Skyhook), human fiddling with nature triggers a series of earthquakes that may result in a 100-foot tsunami aimed at the heart of Seattle. Wealthy developer Mick Walker has sunk a hundred million dollars into a world-class resort on tiny Cascadia Island. What Mick should have known and refuses to believe is that his island is situated directly over a massive fault line. Seismologist Dr. Doug Lam attempted to halt the building of the resort, predicting that the pile drivers and explosives used in the construction could trigger a major earthquake and the resulting tsunami. As Mick and hundreds of his friends and supporters pour onto the island to celebrate the grand opening, the earthquakes begin. Dr. Lam's girlfriend, Jennifer Lindstrom, chief pilot and president of a helicopter business, supplies the aviation angle that all of Nance's books are built upon. Her skill and courage prove pivotal as the earthquake disaster begins to unfold. Nance, an expert in many areas, has written a previous nonfiction book on earthquake concerns (On Shaky Ground), and he builds suspense to a fever pitch in this all-too-credible nail-biter.
I enjoyed this book. I live on the west coast and really enjoy this author. I get immersed this the story line and become a part of the story through the author eyes. He made you belive and almost hear the ocean wave. I would rate this book with three stars.
Washington State's Cascadia Island has been the focus of seismologist Doug Lam's intensive research. Formed by earthquakes centuries ago, the unstable landmass needs only the slightest trigger to unleash a devastating catastrophe.
A wealthy developer stands to make millions from the construction of a luxury resort on Cascadia,,,and no scientist's theories of calamity will stop him. But on the eve of the complex's grand opening, terror rolls in with unstoppable force.
Seismic rumblings along the Northwest Corridor escalate to deadly tremors that put hundreds of lives on the line. With the island imploding and the military ill-supplied, Doug and his girlfriend, pilot Jennifer Laindstrom, race to evacuate the island by air while dreading the worst: the upheaval signals the approach of a killer tsunami......
John Nance melds the high-wire tension of aviation rescue with the horrific power of earth's natural disasters-in an electrifying novel with chilling implications.
No one thinks it can happen. No one hears the warnings. No one will survive.
A nail biter.
