Twelve-year-old CeeCee Honeycutt is in trouble. I found this book to be sad in places, funny in others, and overall a wonderful read. Beth Hoffman is indeed an author to watch. She has much of Fanny Flagg's style in telling a story set in the South and her insight into personalities. This is set primarily in Savannah's historic district during the 50's/60's. It is the story of a young girl who must go to live with an elderly great-aunt after her psychotic mother dies and her abusive father, fortunately, does not want her. She's never had a friend of her own as she's been shunned because of her mother's crazy actions, and now she's with her elderly relative and her friends, neighbors, and relations. But CeeCee is a survivor. Her great-aunt is passionate about the city retaining the old houses in the historic district, taking care of her family, and drags CeeCee along as she goes about her activities. And there is also the black housekeeper who has been with the great-aunt for years. This adds another depth to the story as she finds out about her community and life. Great read.

This is a sad but sweet story of Cecelia Honeycutt, a 12 year old with a psychotic mother and an emotionally distant father. When her mother is killed in an accident, an aunt that CeeCee has never met before shows up to sweep her away to a whole new life. Rich with detail, and at least one sub-plot about race relations in Georgia in 1967, this is a highly enjoyable read about how we define family and the bonds we make.

A roller coaster of events and emotions in the life of a young girl make for a most entertaining read. Many laugh out loud moments come with this book! Loved it!

The beginning half of this book was fascinating! I loved the story of CeeCee growing up and her struggle with her mother. The book continued to be enjoyable throughout, but sort of lost the "gusto" that it had in the beginning. The ending was rather predictable. It was a great feel good "laugh out loud" book. The characters were lovable, and very I could relate to them.
