I've been away from PBS for a while, but in the last few weeks I've ordered and sent out a few books.  And I noticed that none of them were scanned until delivery or just before delivery.  I've also run into this recently with a few items I bought on eBay - no scans.  I realize that the USPS only promises to scan at delivery, and it can be hit-or-miss when something is scanned along the way, but I sent out hundreds of books when I was previously active on PBS, and almost all of them were scanned within a day or two, and usually scanned multiple times until they were delivered.  I was wondering if I was just unlucky with this batch of books, or if the USPS is cutting back on scanning.

You are correct Karen, we are seeing alot less scanning than even a year or two ago.  It's been gradually getting less as USPS upgrades and reorganizes, but I've noticed another big difference since the rate increase in January.  Almost 100% of my Media Mail used to be scanned at the local MM sorting center, the last few months it's something more like half my Media Mail...and this is one of the big regional sorting centers.

I've not noticed any difference.  Maybe it's regional or something?  Mine are all getting multiple scans.

Are you using the prepaid postage with media mail (the 9452 numbers?) that were causing issues in the games forum?  I don't use that service, but have wondered if those get scans as often.

I've been using Paypal postage since I don't have any money in my PBS account, but it was mostly prepaid media mail - I'm not sure if that's different from the postage sold here.  The ones on their way to me do have the 9452 prefix.  However, it seems like something has changed since I used prepaid media mail for years and never had this problem before.

Although at least in one case it seems like a book wasn't actually shipped on time - one of the books that is on its way to me was scanned "Acceptance" just yesterday, 10 days after it was supposedly shipped.  The other one was shipped on 2/25 and still hasn't been scanned at all.

'Acceptance' is an indicator the book may have been mailed late.  Otherwise, books that are blue boxed may not be scanned until delivery.

Dunno if it's the late winter storms causing delays, but I've noticed that many of the books I've received lately have been mailed 4 to 8 days after they were marked mailed.  They are making the trip just fine, but just a smidge late.  OTOH, once they have been marked mailed...I'm noticing less books lost in the mail.
