Some parts I had a hard time getting into but the base storyline I liked.

I love Carole Mattews. This was the first book that I read by her and acctually THE BOOK that got me really into the chick-lit genre and I only bought it because the cover was pretty. Now I can't get enough of these books and it was all because of this book! It is a great storyline and as always Carole has AWESOME characters!!

I used to read Barbara Pym for this same slow, nothing-ever-changes depiction of British country life. Matthews picks up the pace somewhat with modern edgy characters, sexual sizzle and obnoxious neighbors in the true Brit "eccentric-but-don't-notice" style. Funny, particularly in the final resolution.

silly, but entertaining.

What began as a very slow and sluggish start of this book for me, turned out to be quite enjoyable. I really liked Rose and Dan and once all of the introductory blah blah blah for all of the various characters was done, I started to enjoy the story and found myself wondering how it was all going to play out. Considering how Rose is judged by Anais without reason, I am surprised Anais didnt wind up being murdered, but I did enjoy the way she gets her comeuppance in the end.

I didnt care for the way Rose handled the return of Hugh and how easily she gave up on Dan. If the story had ended there, I would have put the book in the freezer. Thankfully, the story provides excellent closure and a happy ending.

My Final Verdict: An enjoyable story that will entertain fans of contemporary romance and chick-lit. If you are a patient reader and can get through the sluggish start, I recommend this book.

I'm a mixed fan of Carole Matthews- I loved "For Better For Worse", but I wasn't crazy about "Bare Necessity". I picked up "Scent of Scandal" because the premise seemed cute and I'm a fan of this genre. Unfortunately I couldn't make it past the 4th chapter. I felt there was just too much going on, too many characters were being introduced that it was hard to keep them straight and none of it was enough to hold my interest. Perhaps if I had stuck it out I would have enjoyed it, as it seems to be a well reviewed book, but it was just too boring for my tastes.
