Sea of Gray The Around the World Odyssey of the Confederate Raider Shenandoah
Sea of Gray The Around the World Odyssey of the Confederate Raider Shenandoah
Author: Tom Chaffin
The newly christened CSS Shenandoah commenced the last, most quixotic sea story of the Civil War; the 58,000-mile around-the-world cruise of the Confederacy's third most successful commerce raider. It was only after ship and crew embarked on the last leg of their journey that the excursion took its most fearful turn.

Interesting story of not-very-publicized events from the civil war. Given that it was outfitted 6 months before the war ended, and most of the mayhem it caused was 3 months after the war ended, they seem to be more of pirates than part of a navy. The author is rather sympathetic towards them, though.
