Subject: Searching "Available" Titles Only...

Greetings!  I'm new to this, having just joined yesterday and mailed out my first 3 books today.  However, when I have added books to my wish list, I can't notice that I'm WAY down the "wait list" for virtually every title.  I can't help feeling that this is a lopsided proposition...I don't mind paying to ship books out, but if one can't realistically expect to ever make it to the top of the wait list for titles of interest, then that's very discouraging.

Is there a way of searching ONLY currently available titles besides looking for the "Order Book" button?  I notice some authors I searched under offered the option of showing "Available Books Only" but others did not.  I find this inconsistency frustrating.

Anyone who has tips for how to only search currently available titles, would you please post here?  Thank you!

:-)  Christa

If you input a title of a book in the search box in the title bar, it will take you to a results screen where you can select to search for book that are avalible to be requested now.

There will be a drop down box with search types, you want to select posted books.

Don't let the Wish List numbers put you off! Very often the books with the long Wish Lists move incredibly fast (I have gone from being #120 on the Wish List to having the book in 4 to 6 weeks in some cases). And as you will soon find out, if you haven't already, there are a lot of great books out there that perhaps you've never heard of before that are available and you can enjoy while you wait for your wish list books.

Welcome to PBS -- it is a great place!

Thank you, Xengab--I knew there had to be some way to do it!  That definitely helps.

And Sally, I appreciate knowing that--it's encouraging, esp. since I have 5 more books I posted that are "reserved" and waiting to hear from the waitlister, and I thought, "Holy Cow!  I'm going to run out of postage money before I ever find any books I can get in return!"  LOL...  I'm guessing if I'm 835 people down the list and I really want to own the book, I'll just have to buy it, but maybe many other folks above me will have already done that, and the line will move faster due to the (similar) impatience of others  ;-)  I can only hope!

Welcome to PBS!

Yes, Wish List books do come, but you need to be a little patient. Popular releases usually start to move really fast once they are released. I have received many many Wish Listed books since I have joined, and now that I have been here a while, I receive some every month, sometimes even more.

With more than 5 million books available to order now .... surely the odds are that you can find something you are interested in!

You just need to give the site a little bit of time to work. New members who join often find themselves in the same boat ... they join the site and have some recently published books to trade, so get many books requests all at once, and in the meantime, find that they may have to join a line to receive other recently published titles. But the system absolutely works once you give it a little time, and soon most members find themselves with too much to read, not the opposite.

You could also sign up for the Daily Digest, that'll let you know every day about which books have been posted in whatever genres you select. There's a thread about it in this forum from earlier today. Anything that shows up in the digest is avaialble, and I've found books there that I never even knew existed.

And fill your WL up.  Max it out. The wider a net you cast the more likely you will get WL books.

My guess is you won't wait terribly long for the paranormals like Hunger Games on your WL. Those are popular books and probably move at a steady pace even thought they seem to always be WL.  More than likely it'll be the self-help, non-fiction type books on your WL that you will wait the longest to get even if htey have shorter WL.  Simply because they aren't as popular, aren't as easily found in yard sales and thrift stores and the kind of books people tend to keep if htey buy them. Whereas, I see the Hunger Games book at the thrift store regularly (along with the Twilight books).

Then once you are here for awhile you and you've moved up some lists, you'll get steady WL offers-unless

Oh and it's OK to not post anymore books for awhile.  I think people have a tendancy to dive right in, post every book they have and then get disappointed that they are sending all these book out and not getting any yet.

I have over 200 WL books here.  I only post them as I need credits.

KEEP IN MIND THAT THE BOOKS WITH THE LONGEST WL'S ARE THE MOST POPULAR.  MANY OF THEM WILL BE LISTED WHEN some of the people get them read, whether they got them here or elsewhere because they couldn't wait for them.  If you go to your WL it will tell you how recently books have been posted and how many of them in the past week or two and an estimate how long they will take.  If you want to look only for boks that are available, go to the "advanced search" area, and poke in "posted books only."  You can put in a favorite author above and all of their books that are available will come upt.

I have been on here since Sept. pf '05, and have now sent out >6000 books, so I know what I'm talking about.
